    PC Booting Problems

I need help, whenever I go to boot up my (Second) PC I get the message Unmountable_Boot_Drive, it says it could be a hardware or software problem but I haven't done anything like that. It also wont let me load up safe mode. Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

Why do people never use the PC Advice forum

    What OS are you using?

You could check your bios, and see if the boot order is correct i.e. floppy, then hard drive. You may have disabled your hard disk by mistake. Alternatively You can check your cables to your drives. Never encountered the problem myself, so i can only tell you the obvious.

Also m8, it might be a good idea to post PC related topics in the PC section of the forum. The console guys tend to get a little nervey when PC related topics are posted in the wrong section.........

I have it set to Floppy, HDD then CD Drive. The last time I used it, I tried to turn it off, it just hung on the Windows is Shuting down screen, so I turned it off at the mains, is this a problem?

I suspect that unclean shutdown might be the source of the problem - you've been quite unlucky there! If this is the case then at least it would suggest a software rather than hardware problem.

Do you have a windows XP CD? Can you boot from it? Some versions (corporate version and full version, I think) offer a "repair windows" function which should re-install windows without actually deleting your files. Failing that, you would need to boot from floppy or CD and then diagnose what has gone wrong with your HD boot sector. Remember, if you have access to a working XP installation it is possible to copy the boot sector of that drive onto a floppy and then copy it over your own HD boot sector. Some system files might be damaged also, but anyone familiar with windows "under the bonnet" could probably get your installation to boot as far as safe mode - at which point you might be able to use System Restore.
