    Macbook Mag-unsafe?

I have had my macbook for a while now and use it a fair bit moving from place to place and essentially what has happened is that the wiring of the connector that plugs into the macbook (the magsafe port) has started to break away and now I have to take to holding it in to charge.

What I want to know is if this is a known fault and the best way to go about contacting Apple and seeing about some sort of replacement if it is the case as well exposed power wires can not be safe surely?

Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Yeah this is a known fault, the ends of the wires connecting to the MagSafe often fray. Happens with iPod cables too. If you're still in warranty Apple will give you a new one, if you're not...well it's worth a shot but you'll probably have to buy a new one. They're about £80 iirc.

Ah man I think the warranty was out about a month ago! I may try and get it still as if it is a known fault then well Apple should take some responsibility.

Would taking it into an apple store help or just got through online methods/calling support?

I don't know if there's an Apple Store in Newcastle, but often I've had better support from AppleCare on the phone than in store anyway. Definitely can't hurt to call them up, they'd be dicks to not give you a new one really.

Under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 you're entitled to a repair or replacement for six years after the date of purchase.

Actually I think it's the Sale of Goods to Consumers Act 2002 you want now but the rest of what Pat says is correct

Thanks for all the comments will get on to the Applecare line first thing tomorrow now. Having to use some good old insulating tape to hold it in place right now.

I would not expect Apple to have such stupid design flaws.

My mum's had this. It was an early white MacBook (Core Duo, not Core 2 Duo) and was outside of warranty. I googled the problem and found reports of it being a recognised fault - when I phoned Applecare they agreed to a replacement after I quoted them the right reference number from Apple's knowlegebase.

However Applecare wanted us to send the adaptor in to them and wait for a replacement. They advised us to go to the Apple Store and buy one to use in the interim, send the faulty one in to them and when they sent us the replacement we should take one back to the Apple Store because they have a 2-week no-quibble returns policy.

Applecare told us that the Applestore wouldn't be able to replace it for me, but I went in without an appointment, spoke to one of the "geniuses" and they were able to sort me out no fuss.
