DSi white screen on boot

Hey, I'm having some trouble with a DSi of a friends. I turn it on, and it comes up with the warning screen, but the touch screen doesn't work. I can press another button to go to the next screen, but both screens just go white. I can hold down L+R+Start+Select to get to the stylus recalibration screen, where the touch screen works, but from there I can only calibrate the touch screen and power off again. I tried taking out the battery, but it has no effect at all.

Any suggestions?

if a game is inserted, take it out and see what happens (cart connectors might be dirty, bit like the old nes/snes days when you had to blow the connectors for games to work)
