    3D TV's

So in the wake of all this, ahem, excitement about 3D gaming, does anyone actually have a 3D compatible set or is anyone planning to purchase one?

I recently bought a boring 2D TV but I had a look at the Samsung 3D model in the showroom. It was playing Fast and Furious 'upscaled' into 3D by the TV itself. Even with the silly glasses on I thought it was completely pants.

I'm sure that a proper 3D Blu ray would have been better but app. the only one you can get right now is Clougy with a Chance of Meatballs...

Anyway, I would be interested to know if anyone had any better experiences?

I demoed the new Samsung 46" 3D TV last night, running the 3D blu ray you mention above....

I was totally blown away. Characters literally pop out of the screen at you and the clarity and depth was outstanding. Its unbelievable the amount of layers that you can see. I passed the glasses around about 4 people and everyone was giggling like a little child, smiling in amazement.

I cant wait to see more BR's coming out for this new format. I can only imagine what action films will look like and more so games!!!

To the guy above, i suggest you go back and ask to see a demo of the 3d blu ray. I guarentee it will change your view!

I was considering Sony's 3D set before I went for the Panny G20

But the cost of the technology just didn't make it viable for me at the moment.

I'll wait a few years & see how the technology progresses & costs to come down & then in 5 or so years when the warranty on the Panasonic runs out I might just buy one.

Till then it's still just a gimick.

Believe me its no gimmick, what i saw last night looked incredibly fresh and immersive - a real breakthrough in entertainment. It really blows aways 2D (which there is obviously still a place for) I really wouldnt like to being wearing those glasses constantly though.

I'm abit like yourself having recently bought a new HDTV. When costs come down and more movies/games become available i can see 3DTV as a very tempting buy.

I'm trying to imagine a first person shooter using this technology and i like what am thinking

          Jesus FPS would be immense

I do like the idea & before I went on Holiday I was all about getting Sony's 42" 803 & the 3D hardware (?1500 for the set + ?250 for 2 pairs of glasses & sender) but when I came back a mere 2.5 weeks after pricing it has shot up to nearly ?1700 for just the set in my local Sony Centre & that put me WAY off & straight onto the G20
Too much at the moment for what is very early tech.
Once it's more established I'll be all over it like a cheap suit.

I do have my concerns about those glasses as well.
As a permanent glasses wearer I am wondering about how prolonged use of those over the top of my specs will affect me.
Cant imagine it being easy to re-adjust after a 3hr+ movie session or even longer gaming sessions

Still I'm keeping a close eye on the tech & how it continues to improve & I suspect one day there will be one in the household

God, I've only just got an HDTV..

I'm sceptical of this naturally, but would like to experience it..

I'm about to get a G20. I'd rather have a decent proven technology than a mediocre 1st gen one. My early adopter days are behind me.

But how much do you have to shell out in total for the experience?

For example, I understand you get one pair of free glasses only.

You get one set with the TV, 1 set with the bluray player, I think Sony and Samsung are currently doing redemption vouchers for another set also.

Still yes, it's all very expensive, at the moment.

I think the Samsung set is about £1800 & I'm sure it comes with 2 pairs.

Panasonic's Plasma starts at about £2500

Then Sony has one model the 803 which is 3D Ready but doesnt come with the sender or any glasses thats £1800 ish + £100 for the sender & £100 per pair of glasses
The 903 model is complete & about £2500

I'm pretty sure all sets come with 2 pairs of glasses but I could be wrong.

The Panasonic is the set to get by all accounts.

                        Neil

Edit - looks like I was wrong, thanks Baseley
I would have expected them to ship with 2 to be honest but hey ho...obviously only expect 1 person to watch telly at a time

initally like any new hardware it going to be costly

I think the 3D Samsung TV (46" LED) i viewed was £2199 with glasses
3D BR players are about £300

fook all out for it atm though, so not really worth it

I`ve had the Panasonic 50 VT20 for around a month now and love it. The 2D performance is amazing, so much nicer than an LCD.

As for the 3D side I demoed the Samsung before this and even though it was pretty good, it didn`t match the panny especially in the 3D stakes. The Samsung you could notice crosstalk, where on the Panny I didn`t. Also on the Samsung if your anything other than centre on while watching 3D, the image will darken. On the Panny it doesn`t.

Also anything less than a 50inch on 3D is pointless as alot of the wow effect will be lost.

I have Sky 3D to which are showing demo loops and replays of footy matches. The football looks quite good and gives nice depth, but what really impressed me was the nature reel and for me nature/wildlife documentaries are gonna benefit a great deal with 3D believe me.

I payed £2150 for mine with Panasonic 5 year warrenty and have no regrets, even a month down the line.

Is it worth paying the extra for 3D? Depends If you want a tv now and want it future proof.
