Romeo Mod, or how to fix moded PS2

Hi Guys,

Someone on here told me that I could stop my moded slim PS2 from blowing its laser ever few months if I did a Romeo mod. Is this true? I have region moded a bunch of retro consoles, so I imagine I'm capable. I just need some experiences before I bother and a pointer in the right direction for info.

I didn't think the slims needed a Romeo mod. It was early v9 and v10.

Yeah, it's just early slim models and late phat models.

Never had a play with a pstwo, is it a v12? it mentions a fix here http://www.eurasia.nu/shop/product_i...roducts_id=274, the same site also has the code to download if you have the means of programming a pic yourself

I'm not sure which version it is (it's under a pile of other stuff while the house is redecorated). It's the first gen silver slim with the Infinity Matrix chip. I'll have a look into this fix. Any further info welcomed.

I can't program the PIC myself, is that a problem? Or at least I don't know how.

Also, if this chip switches off the PS2, does that mean it will do it when I'm in the middle of a game?

It's got 70003 written on the underside. Still unsure how to fix this. Would it be easier to buy a second hand machine and transplant the modchip?

The laser blows after 12 months and has to be replaced. I've had it happen twice and I don't even play the PS2 that often. I was told that the modchip in combination with this PS2 revision has this effect.

I had it repaired by the supplier the first time and they said they'd installed some kind of fix to prevent it, but it's happened again. This really puts me off playing the console.

Just realised I made a mistake on the version number – it's 70003, not 70009. According to this guide that makes it a v12:

I also checked my emails and the fix supplied last time was a summone fix. There's also a mention of a SlimFix, but I did not receive that.

Do I need to be able to progamme the PIC? Also I still would like to know if the PS2 will switch off during play to stop damage?

Wondering if this is really worthwhile. I could get a secondhand machine for £20, and I don't really need the chip. This procedure plus laser could cost more.

That link is for a pre-programmed chip, can't answer the other question though..

As far as I know it doesn't turn the actual pstwo off when it detects a spike, it just kills the voltage going to the drive, hence no laser burnout.

Then turn off, turn back on and it'l be fine.

Personally i'd just grab a cheap second hand machine v14+ and transplant the chip

It has been such a long time since I did it on my V9, but my recollection is that it had something to do with backups (CDR/DVDR).
I never once used a backup in my console, or had any intention of doing so, so I'm not sure why I took the precaution.

All I know is that it involved careful surgery (lifting a ribbon), but it was signifcantly easier than the modchip installation.
