    DC, disc not spinning...

When putting my DC back together, I noticed that the top of the big black box, where the laser bit is, was a tad loose.

I didn't think anything of it at first. But when putting a game in, the power comes on, but the disc doesn't spin.

    Anyone know what's up?

I don't think there was any screws for this certain part, it was quite big too, and sat inside the top of the big black bit.

Does it just click in or something? Does anyone know?

    cheers.

The whole laser unit is 'loose' and just slots on top with rubber bumpers to stop it skipping.

I've had mine apart several times and not had this problem. Did you re-connect all leads and ribbon cables as the power will come on but not reach certain parts if not connected.

Also does the laser move up and down when the power comes on?

I noticed the top bit was really wobbly, which was a worry. I'll have to take it appart and take a look whether the laser moves up and down.

What do you think the possibilities are?

I've another DC, so i'll probably open that up and try to compare them.

        Thanks again for your help.

Hopefully I just haven't connected it probably.

I asked about the laser as it'll show if there's power to that unit!

From (hazy) memory I also think it reads up and down before spinning the disc.

When the top cover is off the whole black unit on top does move quite a lot. Nothing major to worry about I'm sure!

Comparing it to the other DC may be the way forward unfortunatley

It's supposed to be loose and there is supposed to be a screw missing from it as well. Like Aget L says, sounds like your ribbon cable isn't hooked up properly. I assume the light comes on when you power it up yes.

              Yeah the light comes on.

I'll have to check the ribbon when i'm home!

              Thanks for your help.

I swapped the black bits over, the whole chunk of it with my other DC and it works fine.

So somethings up with the unit... Any ideas whatsoever? Or has it just cut out on me?

After a awhile the DC logo appears on screen, but that's it!

                Cheers, scoot.

Check the link in Molloy's post in this thread. Might be what you're suffering from.

                  Then again, it might not.

What else can I try to get it to work? It worked before I took it appart. Could it just be it's packed up on me?

                      Any help?

The only other thing that it could potentially be is the lever switch that recognises when the lid is closed and open.

When pushed backward it normally starts the boot process and spins the disc.

The switch is at the rear right of the DC all you have to do is remove the top half of the shell connect it all up place a disc on the spindle then push the small lever backwards then turn on the power, If the disc dosn't spin the lever/switch mech your holding backward is broken.

                          Hey Kron.

                          Thanks for coming forward...

I removed the shell. ANd pushed the switch back, then turned on the power. I got the noise from the controller. But nothing happened. After a while, the DC logo appeared, then after aggggges. I got a message saying Reading the disc, or something along those lines.

Is it easy to replace these switches? Or will I have to pay for a whole new laser unit thing?

If you could get back to me that would be ace. Thanks.

                          Scott.

                            Hi Scott,

Its possible to replace the single switch and connector, but Ive never seen anyone sell them seperately, Realistically your looking at a new GD drive unit, unless you can find another broken DC with a different fault as a donor.

                              Thanks Kron.

If I found a donor, would you be able to fix it for me if I paid you?
