PAL PS2 and US DVDs

OK, I have a PAL PS2 modded with Messiah 2. This plays region 2 DVDs fine through the component cable without any problems (just mentioning this because I've heard that RGB cables will give a green picture when playing DVDs).
Will my PS2 play region 1 DVDs as well? Or do I need to buy anything else? (and no "yeah, a proper DVD player" please!)
