questions about usb sticks and xbox 360

used up my hardrive space was thinking of getting a usb stick instead of a new hardrive wanted to check though if the usb sticks can do the same ie can have demos/live arcade games/saves on it

    cheers

I think it's just like any other storage device. Remember that you can only have a maximum partition/stick of 16GB and that it will be formatted for use with the console.

I have a 4gb Kingston mem stick and used it for arcade games, but running the start wars: force unleashed demo from it it caused the cut scenes to stutter, dunno if its just my mem stick here but thought it was worth noting.

I got the official 16 GB SanDisk 360 USB stick for my birthday and it arrived yesterday, so I used it and moved my Gamertag and game saves to it from my old 512 MB Memory Unit last night and all was well, until today.

I booted up the console and loaded BC2 and then went to sign in, sometimes I do it in this order, and my Gamertag wasn't there, but the USB stick's light was on, so I went to System Settings > Memory and the USB stick was nowhere to be seen until I unplugged it and plugged it back in again. I never had to do that with the MU.

What use is the official USB stick if you can't leave it in the console on shut down and startup and it doesn't act like the old MU?!

That sounds very like what happens with the 1GB Sandisk USB 2.0 flash drive I use with my original Xbox (notoriously picky with USB devices) . Sometimes it just goes missing on start up or if I try to copy a file or game save it doesn't like for some reason.

Reboot the Xbox or take it out and plug it back in again but in another port and it works perfectly again.

Back on theme - can somebody tell me if in copying stuff to a USB stick on a XB360 it records your current Acheivement points and so forth?

Not being online I don't even have the USB storage capability update yet but now I've about 1800 hard earned APs I'm getting paranoid of losing them if my HDD ever goes wonky.

I've always religiously backed up my saves to memory card, when allowed to, on other consoles. With the XB360 this is the first time I've had some genuinely valuable data on a HDD and no other storage device safety net.

I've been using an official USB stick as a Memory Unit with my Gamertag on for a while now, but something that really annoys me is that it doesn't always register the USB stick is present when you power up the console at the mains.

When I turn on the mains power the USB lights up green and sometimes it goes off after a few seconds, which means the console will see it when I power it up, and other times the USB light stays lit up, which means the console doesn't see the USB stick when I power it up, i.e. zero Gamer tags found. I have to take it out and leave it out for a short while before the console will recognise it when I plug it in again.

The old style Memory Units never had this problem, as I always used to leave it in my old console, but the S console dropped support for the old Memory Unit. I don't really want to move my Gamertag to the hard drive, because I do use it with my old console. It's an irritating problem.

I use the Forza 3 USB stick for my profile and I don't get that problem. Never have done.

I don't turn my consoles off at the mains though...

Ive got a 16gb play branded stick I've had since the dash update and it's worked absolutely fine. Played games off it, arcade games, etc all with no problems at all.

If I have my USb stick in mine the lights stay on even when the unit is off (not at wall)
must be something to do with the standby mode, probably so that in future Kinect can wake the console or something

I know this is a bit old but I do, apparently, now have the USB support dash update thanks to Deadly Premonition.

However I haven't been able to test it yet because ironically the Sandisk Cruzer 4 GB USB flash drive I bought to use with it I thought I'd first check to see if it worked with my original Xbox.

Against all expectation it behaved very like my 1GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro ie. occasionally going missing or copy failing when writing to it but 100% reliable once stuff is on it. So it's being kept for that.

Bizarrely, I now have a 1GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro and a 4GB Sandisk Cruzer flash drive which work with the Xbox. But the 2GB Sandisk Cruzer Micro, identical except in place of manufacture to one that works for Link83, won't work with my Xbox even after totally wiping the installed software and formatting back to FAT32.

Annoyingly after trying it on the Xbox post wipe etc it does seem to have formatted to FATX because my XB360 doesn't recognise it in its current state. So as I still don't have a PC myself I'm going get my bro' to reformat it back to FAT32 for the second time just so I can use it with the XB360.

Point is: two generations of Xbox and neither it seems can be trusted 100% to work with USB storage devices.
