Best BMX Game? (was Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX)

    Hi ladies,

I have this on Dreamcast and love it. However, the framerate drops in some sections really spoil the experience. Anyone know if the PS1 version fares any better?

    Ta.

    In a word: no.

Never played the DC version so I don't know how they compare, but the framerate is seriously bad in parts in the PS version. Even at full whack it's dead slow. Bit of a shame really as it was streets ahead of Matt Hoffman at the time.

      :-(

      I loved the soundtrack.

Ok, Follow up question then. What's the best BMX game out there?

Despite the depth of Dave Mirra's I would go for Matt Hoffman's 2. All the flatland stuff is pretty fun. Obviously it's more towards the Tony Hawk end of the scale whereas Dave Mirra's leaned more towards the realism/Skate end, but the framerate and occasionally wonky controls in Dave Mirra's mean Matt Hoffman's 2 has the edge for me.

That said, I never played the other games in the Dave Mirra series, but I gather that they never really improved drastically. And then there was that BMX XXX thing wasn't there? Which was supposed to be, appropriately enough, pretty wank.

I wish someone would make a completely new game with a Skate-style approach. It could be ace.

Yeah, I played Matt Hoff 2. It was pretty good, although it did kinda feel like a skateboard game that had been adapted (dunno if this was actually the case but that's how it felt). I never played XXX. I'll look out for Matt Hoff 2 then. Cheers.

Oh, and I second the call for a new BMX game in the vein of Skate!

This was ace, although tricky at first. I still have it (ntsc-u) if you want to try? I've been playing it recently

Nice review. Yeah, I'd love to give that a go Charles. Give me a chance to try out my freeloader disc too (donated by someone on these very boards but so far still sealed!).

Dave Mirra 2 was very good, there was a sort of sequel called BMX XXX that used the same engine but added a rather forced-feeling and tame '18-rated' twist to the proceedings, it was actually OK though not a patch on Mirra 2.

Matt Hoffman's 2 WAS basically Tony Hawk's 3, pretty much the same controls, engine etc., not a bad game, very playable (cos it plays like THPS3!) but the level designs were a bit off, a wee bit boring.

There was also another BMX game, on Xbox1, it's called 'Toxic Grind' and it is really, really rubbish, though is worth checking out just to see how weird it is.

                  Cheers JazzFunk.

Just looking as some Mirra 2 vids (gamecube version) and it looks EXACTLY the same as the Dreamcast version of the original game. Even the same music and menus. Anyone know what the improvements were over the original?

Haha, litterally playing this game yesterday, get the Xbox version if you have a PAL 360 as it's 100% compatable, only time there's any sort of frame drop I can tell is a slight judder when the music changes track..

I'm not sure what's my favourite of the two but with Dave Mirra 2 you get the whole of Camp Woodward to play around on and thats pretty ace, any questions and I'll try get back to you on it as I have it right here..

Cheers, Charles' copy for the cube has just arrived so I'm gonna get stuck in. So the original only had a small section from Woodward then?

It had Lot 8 which is a cool part, but as far as I can remember none of the rest, it certainly wasn't fully exploreable like in the 2nd though.

One thing I find seriously missing on it going back to playing it is the cool Tony Hawks feature where you could press both triggers to "Drop In" to any ramp and flat bank, I really like that as you can flow stuff much easier, tell me if you think the same after a bit playing it..

Will do. Did you/do you still ride for real? I finally jacked it in when I was 37 and spills started to hurt too much!

Yea, I still throw it down

I'm 24, I actually ride Bike Trials rather than BMX, I rode BMX for a few months just to try it out and may get back into it after riding with local BMX crew in town the other day as nobody rides bike trials (4 people in and around the city I live - including me)

                            Some pics:

And two videos for you: (all very old stuff now)

You got some skills mate! Why has no one made a game out of this? Trials HD is the closest I guess but I was thinking something free roaming based on a BMX game engine. Someone make it!
