Perry's site is alright for a trip down memory lane like, lots of Gamesmaster info there I'd forgotten about.

        Well worth a browse.

Those, Dave Perry or not, were indeed the golden years of gaming.

Trouble was the producers could only finds about 20 young school kids, many of which didn't even play games, and had certainly not played that game. Every thing was shot so that it looked like the champion was thrashing 100 players, but really there was only about 20, and they were all lambs to the slaughter. At one point Dominik asked me sarcastically if I fancied taking the Japanese lad on. Cheesed off with seeing him beat these poor kids I said I would happily have a go at him. Needless to say they didn't let me near the machine, and cut that conversation out of the show.

Does anyone remember the BattleCruiser 3000AD saga ?

Heh, I recall following a long protracted newsgroup battle between disgruntled gamers and 'Dr.' Derek Smart who wanted to know where he got his academic credentials ... he refused to say.

Also, I believe this game was the first of its kind to have a print-ad with a half-naked girl and an innuendo as a lead line ...

            S.

              and the GameCube, in fact.

a car crash in slow motion, much as I love it.

I'm going to change my avatar to John Romero's head. Maybe not

Reading all that has actually made me want to play the game. My mate used to have the N64 version, I think he burned it though.
Id Software seemed to be famous for drinking lots of soft drinks, so the Sprite tower behind Romero in that picture points to one habit he apparently took with him to Ion. David Kushner, the author of Masters of Doom, describes moments with John Carmack in several chapters of his book where he's in need of another Diet Pepsi. So, a Pizza and glucose water diet seems to be obligatory when designing deathmatch levels or creating a FPS engine.

And, just like you, DavidFallows, I wanted to have a go at Daikatana after having read a lot about it. I downloaded the demo and that scratched the itch. The game's not all bad, but certainly no definitive winner.
