    Which HDMI cable

    Hi

I have just moved into a new apartment in Toronto and the landlord has left their ps3 for me to use. It is currenty using a composite cable to connect to the tv which i want to replace with an hdmi cable. I went into best buy and they had HDMI cables for $30, $70 or $140. am I going to notice any real difference between the cheap one and the expensive one? I just went on amazon and people are selling "premium" cables for about $5 so should I just go for the cheapest?

    Thanks

Yes. There's no point in buying expensive ones.

I've heard that in North America, some greasy companies are cashing in on the confusion about '120hz/240hz' LCD TVs and are selling "240hz" HDMI cables. I'm sure there's a legal reason they haven't tried that in the UK yet (or have they?)

It is digital so it will either work or not. You'll only need a decentish quality one if you need a long cable run >10m.

So there's no difference huh? Kewl.

Ah, Sony branded! They'd still come from the same Taiwanese factory

Be warned, cheapest possible ones can still have build quality issues not relating to signal quality. I bought £2 cables from Ebay and they worked fine. Removed the cable from my PS3... It left the connector casing inside the unite. Was a bitch to get out.

But anyhow. HDMI has a high level of error correction, good quality cable makes little to no difference over a short distance. It's 10m when you get noticable signal degredation or much shorter if you put it near high powered speakers.

I'd say you should look to be spending £5-8 on a 2m hdmi cable.

I don't really understand why, in this day and age, Sony don't include an HDMI cable with the PS3. I mean if you can get an HDMI cable for a couple of quid then surely Sony, with all their bulk buying powers, can get them for significantly less.

                  Same goes for Microsoft.

Oh aye. What makes it even more funny in the case of MS was that they used to include a component/HDMI cable with the 360 before taking them out. lol.

does gold a connector add anything to a HDMI cable? better signal transfer?

i bought a few 'cheap' ones and i had issues with flecks on screen, signal drop outs and flicker. Also cheap ones tend to 'wobble' around a bit, so i beg to differ

a couple of QED classic sorted the problems out

I also bought a DVI to HDMI cable from eBay. Cost me next to nothing but it didn't work properly, I guess the cable was broken. Ah well, chucked it in the bin and forgot about it.
