    crt recommendation

Readying myself for some N64 goodness - RGB modded. (seems to be a common thread around here at the mo!)

Thought I had an old Sony 14" at my Mums, went round tonight, apparently went to the skip years ago!

Anybody have a recommendation, I see sony trinitron seem to get a good rep here.

21" Sony flatscreens seem to be choice. I have one and it's still looking good.

What RGB mod has it got?

Its gotta be a last generation 32" or 36" Toshiba or Panasonic CRTs as they're generally accepted as the best, especially when calibrated. They can still rival LCDs and Plasmas in certain aspects. They also also contain component inputs if you fancy stepping up to NTSC 480p or PAL 576p. I should imagine you could get hold of a 2nd hand for next to nothing now as they are HUGE and people would be desperate to offload them.

I had the Toshiba 32" with deinterlacer and it was superb. Sold it to someone on this forum.

Make sure you can adjust the geometry from the service menu on big sets.

My dad has a Samsung high def CRT. Sadly the geometry is terrible. Lolling at Charles' link.

Look on ebay for a Loewe CRT. Models like the Vitros, Aconda and Xelos are CRT sets of the highest order. Great picture and sound that shames pretty much anything else. Some even have VGA built in.

                            I've got a Loewe Nemos.
Don't think it's that great for 240p tbh, I've got two other CRTs (a CM8833 and a NOS 1991 Sony Trinitron) both are significantly better, I presume due to the lack of any kind of processing.

Personally, I think Lowes reputation ultimately outweighed their performance for a lot of their sets, people assumed the massive prices meant they were the best avaliable. Definetly not as bad a Bang & Oulfsen but certainly over priced for what you'd get in the end, especially when compared to the Tosh, Panny and sony's.
