    Thanks for the help.

I've tried everything on here as well as info I've found elsewhere without anything changing. There's no real issues having it happen it happen but it's annoying because I know it's wrong.

I think the most annoying thing is that as a PC user I was endlessly messing around with things that weren't working but this is the first problem I've had.

I'm tempted to buy an external hdd on pay day to start using Time Capsule again. I can't imagine there's any real reason to pay the premium for the official version?

If I was to do that is it possible to first of all back up my settings and files then reinstall OSX using Time Machine or do I need other software? I've got loads of software from buying a few of those Apple bundles that seem to happen so I probably have something of use somewhere.

John, what you want is to make your mac 'archive and install'.
I'm on a mobile device so can't elaborate now. Google it. Basically it reinstalls the os without losing your apps and data. It makes a backup of he current install and shoves it in a folder in case you need to get something out.

Read up on it first though so you know what will and won't work afterwards.

        Thanks Brad,

I've had a brief look and I think I'm going to give it a go sometime to see if sorts the font problem out. I'll need to get myself a hdd or Time Capsule first though so it'll probably be after pay day when I do it.

Delete any dupes and try this app and delete the font cache

Already tried that but gave it another go without anything changing.

I have managed to sort it out by finding a way to reinstall the system fonts from the two install discs. After spending ages messing around I discovered the Pacifist shareware programme.

It essentially let me browse everything that was on the discs and then I could either install or uncompress them and install them manually with FontBook.

It's a really simple programme and I imagine it could be really for other things also. I'm not sure I'll ever need to use it again but I bought it anyway as it was well worth $20 for letting me sort out the problem.

I have got a few duplicate fonts which are easy enough to sort out and I'd messed around with the settings so much while trying to sort it that I need to get them all back to how they were but it seems to be done now.

            Thanks for the help everyone!!
