PS3 not turning on. Can i back up my save files now????

Heres the issue, quite common by all accounts:

PS3 red light comes on, then when i turn it on, it goes green for about 3 seconds then turns itself off.

Done the usual, cleaning and removing HDD etc. Anyone had this. I'm assuming its going to be a Sony return?

Just wondered if there is something i can try before i do

Also, now its bit the dust, is there anyway of saving my save games as there's no way i'm going to re-invest 300 hrs in Fallout 3 plus all my others like Dead Space, Everybodys Golf, Demons Souls, Oblivion etc etc.

Its a pain in the f*cking arse that Sony have their own bespoke encryption on there so that a PC can't read the data and you can't shove it in another machine.

If i can get the bloody thing to work for 30 mins, that would do i think so does anybody know of the best option here or has it happened to anyone else?

After my old elite went 3RR, i tried fixing that myself and what a pain getting the thing open to the MB so don't know if i can be arsed doing that with the PS3 especially after reading Darwocks adventure below

Will a 3rd party be able to fix this for long enough to back up my saves.

FFS, what happened to the good old days of not having to worry about this. I've got an Atari 2600 that still works and a 20 yo SNES. I know they have no moving parts and don't generate the intense heat but even so, you'd think that Sony would have followed MSoft's lead by allowing you to back up from the HDD out of the machine.

Yes i should have backed up my data you'll cry, but tbh, why should I?? Its a games console, not a PC/Server holding financial information and HR data!! and as such there should be a system in place for this or to save your games to an online repository. I bet most gamers don't backup their gaming data because its not something you should really have to be worrying about with a gaming console. [/RantOver]

    Cheers

If you look very closely, I think you'll see that it goes yellow for about half a second before the green. In other words, it is dead.

You can do some kind of self-repair that involves re-flowing the contacts on the motherboard, but you need to get heat-guns and all kinds of stuff that make it a bit of a pain in the behind.

I started down that road just for the sake of getting my save data off it, but after destroying 90% of the screws in the machine before I even got close I ended up just tearing it apart to get the disc out and consigning it to the scrap heap. It's still sitting there next to the TV though.

PS3 not turning on and HDD backup Q's

I thought as much. Not done bad i suppose. Launch machine with the backwards compat. I'll see what a fix is but i'm probably gonna have to buy a new one.

I'll have to back everything up now

Actually just thinking, if i buy another PS3 can i basically copy my data from my 60GB to the new HDD? Will it all work okay or is there some Sony Protection in place?

All i was thinking was sticking my 60GB in a caddy and copying to the new system when i get it.

NB* Amended original post with updated info..

Lots of people have had success with the self-repair, I just didn't have the patience for it I guess. It probably only buys you a little extra time but that's all you'd need to get your save files transferred.

Note that a back-up wouldn't let you restore the copy-protected stuff to a new machine. You have to do the data transfer thingy. So make sure you get a new machine BEFORE you do the repair, in case it breaks again before you are ready to transfer.)

Ahh right. I thought you could transfer your saves to 16GB memory stick then copy from that to the new PS3. What a crock this is turning out to be. Cheers Darwock
