Ascendancy

The missus says she used to play this and quite enjoyed, i can't say i've got a clue about it so thought i'd ask on here.

Is there any newer games out now that are similar to it, that she would most probably like?

Sounds a bit like Masters Of Orion, or maybe Galactic Civilisation, which Penny Arcade raved about.

Galciv is your best bet (as above). A truly excellent game that you can either buy in Game or buy from the website. They have also just released a big new update for FREE (unlike EA and their contemptable "charge you almost the same price for a half-assed update that only serves to deliver the game you should have had in the first place")....

Considerably better than ascendancy which had a lot of potential but was ruined by a non-existent ai...

Other options -

MOO1/2, STARS!, Space Empires IV (?I think?)...

or

MOO3 - opinion varies from "don't touch with a ****ty stick" to "it's alright with the latest patch" (bear in mind that at one point you could actually get Amazon.com to pay YOU to order it from them!)
