Not by default but they can be optimised pretty easily.
Boot times are slower in XP but in general it feels as fast as win7.
I have a 1Gb RAM drive for browser cache and a small swap file to cut down on the wear and tear.

It is fast enough to make a difference.

Even net books feel a new lease of life with SSD, I put an 80GB Intel X25-M Mainstream SSD in my NC10 last Thursday. It has to be run in advanced SATA mode as even though the older NC10 bios 04CA gives AHCI mode as a hidden option the BIOS can't detect the drive when it's selected.

Considering the architecture it's paired with the speeds are none too shabby, especially when you look at the speed of the first Macbook Airs with SSDs and that was a $1000 upgrade.

I put the 60GB SSD in my USA Launch PS3 and I feel games cache and install way quicker. I can't give figures but I honestly feel the machine is faster now, especially on GT5.
