Networking Q - IP addresses, etc

I'm having some problems with using my home LAN when I connect to my work network via VPN. As soon as I connect to the work network, I can't use any local shared folders or devices, although I can ping my individual machines.

I'm sure it is something to do with IP addresses conflicting, but don't know how to sort it.

My home setup uses IP addresses 192.168.1.x (fixed IP addresses, 192.168.1.1 being the router), and subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

The work VPN connection uses auto IP address and auto DNS server, with subnet mask 255.255.255.255. Once connected, I get a work IP assigned of 192.168.1.168 or similar. This is obviously giving out IP addresses with the same range as some of my own machines, like my file server which is 192.168.1.2, and which I can't use while connected.

What do I need to change so that I can use all my shares while connected to the work network?? I use XP pro on all machines BTW...

Any help would be muchly appreciated folks.....

It could be a problem with the setup of vpn. You need to uncheck the use gateway on remote network.

Right click on VPN | Select Properties

Highlight networking tab | Double click on TCP/IP Protocol

        Click Advanced

The General Tab should be displayed. Uncheck use remote gateway.

That should do the trick. (My PC is XP, however it should be very simular for other OS)
