A friend in need.. Tv reccomendation

A mate of mine is in the market for a LCD or plasma tv.

    His criteria:

    46" - 50"
    4 hdmi connections if poss
    £700 maximum price

He's a big gamer, sports and film fanatic.

    What would you recommend?

    Thanks

Lol I was thinking just that

If he could possibly go down to a 42" screen then you can get the Panny G20 Plasma for sub ?600 these days & it's a cracking set.

I got mine last July for ?900 & it was worth every penny.

I did look to see if I could find the 46" G20 within budget for you but I keep drawing a blank I'm afraid.

I would heartily recommend one though if he can get one.

I would also look at the 590 LG plasma, saw one the other day and was seriously impressed, and I have always used Panasonic and Pioneer panels, but it looked sharper than anything I have seen before, noise free and great colours.
Blacks were not quite up to the latest Panny models or the Pioneers, but no worse than my PHD8 Panny and that is fine for me.

          50" at £649 can't be bad!

Not sure what it is like for gaming though?? LGs don't tend to have the best lag rates on LCD, not sure if it is the same for their plasmas.

              +1

For me, they represent the current sweet spot. You can get a TX-P42G20 for not too much cash now.

Unlike the LG Plasmas, they have almost no input lag, great black level, and are very resistant to image retention (the LGs retain HUDs and game scores quickly).

One of the managers at my work has an LG plasma and I was shocked at how quickly retention kicks in. I'd be very wary of them.

Just had a proper look at an LG again, and this time in proper lighting, the blacks are crap!

Just goes to show you really need to demo TVs in all conditions, my old PHD8 destroys it in every area.
                  So scrub that suggestion. haha

My Dad has a Samsung (series 6 I think, not sure on the model) and I'm always amazed at how quick that is as well.

You know it's the sensible thing to do lol

If you weren't so far away I'd invite you both down for a proper demo in comfortable surroundings

I don't reckon they are as good as they used to be though.
The motion on the latest sets is not brilliant at all from what I have seen.
