    Recommended Panasonic Q Modifier

After a lengthy search for someone who would mod my brand spanking new Q, who I felt would do a good job and at a reasonable price I can wholeheartedly recommend the guys at

Specialists in IT support and repair services, console repair, mobile and tablet repair based in Bewdley, Worcestershire.

Excellent customer service by Steve and Lee - the techy.

After supplying the mod kit and couriering the Q to ZooDirect, the cost was ?75. I got the PAL mod and game region mod done (via a mounted switch) and it all works a treat. Well chuffed.

There's a very good chance you'd have to pay import duty when purchasing from Lik Sang or PlayAsia. So if you can source a 'virgin' Qube, duty free, I'd recommend the mods mentioned. On top of which, neither of those suppliers will install the game switch-mounted mod. I'd take this mod over the power button mod - whereby I'd have to keep my finger on the power button for five seconds every time I wanted to play a US game.

Iv got a spice cube from Lik - Sang and they put a red switch on the back of the cube to change it from US to JAP region and they did a very nice job of it too. Id suggest contacting Lik - Sang as to whether they still do this.

I got the impression that they wouldn't do it when reading the Panasonic Q FAQ on the Lik Sang website.

"Q: Can the Panasonic GameCube Q be programmed that it always start with the US version without holding the powerbutton for a few second every time? (2002-03-13)

A: Yes it can, but you will have to do the modification yourself, you'll have to make the wires form a permanent closed circuit, thus would disable your ability to play japanese games, but it would always start in US mode then. (2002-03-13)"

Although it's not quite the same as fitting a switch, the above mentioned mod seems easier to perform than the switch mounted mod.

Thats a slight exageration - you only need to keep your finger on the power button for about 1 full second. I'd sooner this than have the Q's lovely case bastardised by a switch.

Just Googling the web, to get my facts straight, I've found different sites by e-tailers and Q owners, quoting the time as 3 seconds, 5 seconds and a 'few seconds', but I couldn't find a site which said it was 1 second.

Unless you make it a habit to look at the back of your Q on a regular basis it's not noticeable. I'm happy with the mod because not only did I hate the idea of waiting those 'few seconds'. I also had a concern regarding the life of the power button, as all GC games are US, with only one Jap game in my collection.

BUT there's now a new power button mod, which defaults the Q to US mode and keeping the power button pressed when turning the Q on will switch it to Jap mode.

Well, I own a Q, with the power button mod, so I'm speaking from experience, and I can tell you that you don't need to keep your finger on the button for more than 1 second. I think they state longer just to air on the side of caution, however, 1 second is all it takes.

You fail to grasp the idea that people are different. Whilst some are happy with their lot, other's prefer things differently. Ever heard the phrase 'to each their own'? Given the choice, would you use a boot disc, or would you get your DC, PS2 etc. chipped - wait and boot or be instantly able play a game of any region? It's the same thing and I know which I'd choose.

Was the power button designed to be depressed for a few seconds every time someone wanted to play a US game? That's got to have some bearing on the life of the power button.

each to their own indeed, but Bcass is correct. 1 second is all it takes. I remember testing this when i first had my Q. But it really is a second. In fact if i want Japanese games i use the remote control. Easy really.

Can I add my 2 penneth please???

The Q power button mod keeps it in the last selected region.. You only have to hold down to change the region.

                            Well mine does that anyway

                              mine always defaults to US.

I guess different mods could require the button held down for different amounts of time. I'd be suprised though.
