Gamecube/N64 best set up for plasmas?

Hi all, just dug out some of my old consoles and wondered how's best to set them up on a plasma?

My consoles are an ntsc N64 modded for use with jap games and a pal gamecube.
Also anyone know if an N64 passport is any good?

Thanks for any advice, please don't get too technical as it'll go right over my head ha ha.

For the cube use component (assuming you can run PAL cube games in progressive scan)
For the n64 - dont bother, it will look gash, use RGB scart if its modded to do so on a CRT

There are a variety of upscalers you could use, There are a few guys on the forum that should be able to give you more info on these

      XRGB-2+/3.

I don't believe many Cube games are able to run in 480p in PAL land.

For N64 as above really. Even via my XRGB-2+ the RGB doesn't look as good as say my PlayStation or Saturn at all.

Thanks for the responses. Cube is really bright will a component lead make it better? Also where would the best place be to get one?

Component lead will set you back like £40, unless you can get one on here cheaper. My D-Terminal cost me £24 from UK eBay but I got sorta lucky with that.

Best off sticking to RGB on a PAL Cube really.

You're dependent on the quality of the scaler in the TV (i.e. blowing up the 720x480 image to the resolution of your TV) in both cases. Obviously if you can get 480p on the GameCube then this will probably improve picture noticeably. In order for that you need (A) component cables and (B) 480p software. No PAL GC games support 480p as far as I know, it was removed. However, I think one of the chips for the cube can force 480p (QOOB?) if you could get one installed.

N64, will naturally be 480i, so the only way you could improve picture quality, if it is poor, is to get a scaler such as XRGB. However, it may be that your TV's scaler can do an equally good job.

Personally I just use a CRT for retro.

As MMP says, no PAL Cube games support 480p. Component will still be good though.

My N64 with RGB mod looks fantastic on my plasma. Just as good as my CRT and better colours. It wasn't always good though - had a few issues until I got an RGB chip crafted in there.

Have a specific chip? Also do you have resistors in your RGB cable charlesr?

My RGB mod takes the values directly from the video chip so the RGB is a bit too bright. I added some 150Ohm resistors to the RGB lines but it's still a tad bright so I was thinking of adding another 150Ohm resistor to each line and see how it looks then.

I started off with the 3 wire plus bridge amp. That caused flicker.
Then I removed the bridge amp and used a scart cable amp. That looked amazing on my CRT, but caused horrible hatching on my plasma.
Then I got a Nintendo RGB chip added with a normal scart and it's perfect on everything.

Where'd this Nintendo RGB chip come from may I ask?

I'm now well and truly out of my depth now with talk of chips etc ha ha. I'll look for a component lead first, see if I can find one.
                        Thanks guys

I'll contact the chappie and see if it's possible to get hold of any more.

I saw how you had yours installed and could do it myself should you be able to get hold of another. Would be much appreciated too!

Putting chips in is way out of my capabilities unfortunately
