    GC Memory cards

Due to Nintendo's decision to take my money by dropping the price of the GC, I need to confirm or destroy the rumours I've heard about 3rd party memory cards. Is it true that they can get corrupted (or otherwise lose their data) through normal use?

The reason I ask is that I'm a little skint at the moment (I'm going to buy the console and borrow a friend's copy of Wind Waker until I can afford Metroid Prime), but obviously need a memory card to play .

And I just found out that in comparrison at ?15 per 4mb official Nintendo card, the XBox hard drive is worth nearly ?31000. I seriously hope I got my calculations wrong

I only ever buy official mem cards.

Until the dark day i bought a 3rd party cube card so the other half could have a go on Animal Crossing, it now very rarely loads the game and i need to buy a official card and hope it will transfer.

Never under any circumstance buy non official cards !

Official memory cards all the way for me.

I've used some 3rd party PS2 and GC memory cards and they usually end up corrupted. Official memory cards have never ever let me down, ever!

Also, go for the 251 official memory card - its much better value than the 59 card.

The ?6 saving or something will in no way make up for the possible trauma of losing your savegames. Get the 251 now. They are dirt cheap on play.com (although out of stock atm).

I have been using a 4MB Joytech memory card for my Japanese GC games; it's been working fine so far.

If you're shopping for a 3rd party card, make sure it provides uncompressed memory.

Should the price tag of an official one be less than twice the amount you'd have to pay for a licensed manufactured card, I wouldn't go for the latter. Ok, meaning: if you don't save hard on an inofficial and uncompressed save medium, go for the one offered by the console motherbrain. I would.

Ok, thanks for the info, guess I'll just have to save that little bit longer

The joytech one died on me after about 6 months but then worked fine when reformatted, bought an official one within days and threw the joytech away.

Luckily I never lost data this way yet. It's a horrible thought, having to perhaps start a RPG over, when you've spent substantial time playing it. I'll probably just use the Joytech one for arcade game settings and the like from now on.

Backing up your important saves on another memory card periodically might be a good strategy.

Take a look in your local Tesco because the one near me has official 59 block memory cards for ?10 which isn't bad
