    Nintendo 64 start screen

Long story short, I came into possession of a N64 last week and it is supposed to be a Japanese N64, modded to output RGB and with a UK power supply. However I don't have a Japanese N64 game to test on it and when I turn it on, my default blue screen on my Toshiba HDTV does not give over to a N64 screen.

Will a Nintendo 64 only display a image if a game is inserted?

    dont think it does m8

best way to check is turn on the n64, holding the start button of the controller, with a controller pak inserted and it should display a memory pak managment screen

I only have UK PAL N64 games and I don't have a Memory Pak either!

Thanks for the advice though, I guess I'll have to test it with a Japanese game to confirm it does work.

The Nintendo 64 only displays an image if there is a cart inserted correctly. My XRGB "signal" light doesn't even turn on when I try turn it on without a cart in - meaning it's not just a black screen, there's really no signal.

A US game would also work to test it.

... Provided the tabs have been removed (plastic region-blocker in the cart flap).
