    Freesat / Freeview HD

So in about a month I'm going to lose Sky+ HD. What should I do about it?

Before sky I used PlayTV on my PS3. This was an excellent system but obviously not High Def.

I like being able to remote record using the Sky app on my Android or iPod touch.

I kinda like watching things in HD these days.

    What are my options?

    Ta.

Keep Sky from the sound of it.

I don't think there's any other way that you could use an app to record shows and Freeview HD only has about 3 HD channels.

When you cancel your Sky account (but keep the box and card), which HD channels remain available if any? I've seen reports that say none and others that say BBC etc.

Hmm. Do all the "plus" features like live pause and record on the SkyHD box stop working when you cancel?

How do they know if you stopped paying? Does the box phone home or something? Can't you just disconnect it from the phone line to keep the features?

I'd guess the card gets updated over the air.

Yeah, same way it knows you can't access certain channels.

I recently got rid of my Sky HD box and replaced it with a Humax Freesat HD box. There are fewer channels available on freesat compared to a cardless Sky HD box but the picture quality on the Humax, on HD channels especially, is much better. Includes fast, full screen BBCiplayer and ITVplayer channels too which the Sky box doesn't provide.

Definitely a good option for subscriptionless/cardless Sky box owners.

I ended up getting PlayTV for my PS3 + a 640 gig drive. I decided that there aren't enough HD programs that I really care about now that HD movie channels and HD Sky One are gone. I'll probably get an HD Freesat PVR once there's more HD content that I care about / have time to watch. The PlayTV EPG is still unsurpassed too. I can watch recorded programs upstairs via my PSP Go / Cradle / Component Cables / Remote Play combination too
