SCART to Component convertor

Hello!

I've got a small 15.4" LCD TV that I'd like to hook up one of my Mega Drives to. I've got a SCART to Y-U-V converter (CSY-2100) that I'd like to use, but on the TV (Tevion/Aldi job) I only ever get an "Out of range" error message.

I've tried plugging a Sega Saturn and the cable TV box in via SCART too, but nothing's working. Tried a Multi-mega on my 38" Samsung, but that didn't work either.

Dicky YUV convertor? Anyone else got a similar set up working?

That is a strange error message and I can't think what it means. However one thing does occur to be to ask. I know nothing about the Mega-Drive or Saturn for that matter so forgive me for asking but do they actually support RGB via SCART?

If not that's probably the reason why it's not working.

Yeah, both the MD and Saturn have RGB SCART leads, but I know they'll output a lower res than the DC. Guess I might as well try it.

I think you may have answered your own question there. If it's outputting less than 480i there's a good chance your TV doesn't support that lower resolution via Component. You'd have to check the TV manual to confirm that but it could explain the error message too.

The RGB SCART to Component converter doesn't upscale. The resolution in and out remain the same. It needs some extra sync separator circuitry but you can actually use those same converters to adapt DC RGB SCART leads to give 480p via Component too.

Tho the poster stresses you must use one that passes 300mA/7.5-9V, mine came with a 500mA power adapter

I have very good reason to believe the used UK CYP CSY-1200G and PSU I bought are a genuine pair. You'd expect the converter itself would show the power requirements but it's not marked on the casing. I'm surprised it meets UK regulations in not doing so.

However after saying that the PSU supplied for my CSY-1200G is definitely correct: 9v 500mA.

I say this because I have another similar RGB SCART - Component converter but unbranded. That requires a 12v 300mA suppy. 12v is clearly marked on the input so I know that's correct too. The pictures of the transcoder your link above shows looks almost identical to this one.

The specific PSU rating he recommended might just be applicable to US users. I know that both my PSU for that and the CSY-1200G are for UK mains only ie. not universal. Your retro consoles and TV, unless imports, will also be speced for UK mains supply too. I'd be surprised if any of this was the cause of your problem.

Because of my own uncertainty at the time I bought it I checked places selling the CYP CSY-1200G new online just to make sure the PSU supplied with that was right. I couldn't find the CSY-1200G just the specs for the CSY-1200. That showed it used a 7.5v 500mA PSU.

I've now remember I actually e-mailed CYP customer support and was told that the 9v 500mA PSU I had was correct for the CSY-1200G I was using.

Still, doesn't help explain how the poster in the article does have it working and details how to go about it, with screenshots…

Will try and dig out a multi-adapter and see if the power settings change anything.

I don't see how the PSU for the transcoder can affect anything. As I understood it he was just warning people to use the correct PSU for the transcoder so you don't fry it. There are so many devices that use similar PSU's it would be easy to use one wrongly rated. That's all that was meant.

The power supply for the transcoder powers its particular circuitry and if the CSY-1200 you have specifies a 7.5v 500mA power supply that is what you should use. The Component output signals it produces should be within entirely normal specification.

Have you tried these consoles with their RGB SCART cables plugged directly into a TV with RGB SCART inputs? If they work with that you know the RGB output is correct and the transcoder should be having no problem converting them to Component output. That's what it is supposed to do.

If you still have a PS2, Xbox, GC or XB360 with a proper RGB SCART lead you could also test them. We know for sure they should all be outputting either 576i/50Hz or 480i/60Hz RGB via SCART.

So if they don't display correctly when you're using the transcoder there's likely something wrong with it.. If it does display OK you know the problem is somewhere else.
