Making a HDD backup that is bootable from a DVD?

I've been looking for a way to do this and I'm sure it was a lot simpler but it's been a couple of years since I tried to to this last and I can't remember for the life of me the easiest way to do it. I've been looking at Norton ghost but it seems a lot more complicated and requires installing etc.

Basically, my mate bought a new laptop with Windows 7 which is just a power hungry waste of space in my opinion, so I formatted it and put XP on it for him, legitimately by the way as I have an MSDN license.

However getting drivers to work on it was a royal pain in the arse as XP isn't officially supported, so now that i have it working all i want to do is clone the install that is on there and put it on a DVD, so if it goes tits up (which it will as he's a liability on these things) i can just pop in a DVD and restore it to it's "Virgin" state if you like.

I preferably would like a free solution, and one which stores the image and the loader all on the one disc so that it's a simple task. Anyone know the best way to do this?

You could make a VM of it and run it in a virtual environment which you can back up.

USB is an option, just looking for something quick and easy to be honest. With vmware is it an all in one solution?

I think one of the cloning progs will be more suitable then but I don't know about free ones.
TBH Win7 is no more resource hungry than winXP on modern hardware so all a bit pointless IMO.
