    mod a panasonic q

    Hi
I believe some panasonic Q's had a switch to go between Jap/US games. The majority you have to hold the power button down I believe.

Does anyone know where this mod can be done?

Only one place i knew did this mod and he hasn't done them for years. I still have a kit that i got off him after he stopped doing the mod.

The mod is way beyond any normal type of region mod btw (SMD chips etc have to be replaced).

I have this mod on my Panasonic Q but it was already done when I brought the machine back on 2002 in Hong Kong, so not much help here neither...

Could you not get instructions online somewhere?

IIRC the import version from Lik-Sang came pre-modded along with PAL Region 2 DVD playback. I remember the R2 PAL DVD modification involved an extra memory chip being soldered onto one of the boards, along with the region (firmware?) update which had to be loaded off a special disc.

yep sure was, he won't touch them now (well as of about 2-3 years ago)as he said it was a really tricky mod and required are fair bit of intricate work. He sent me the instructions and i have them somewhere stored incase one day i could find someone willing.

Actually re-reading this the OP just wants a game region changer. I got my Q when it first came out and NCSX did a push button mod to change the regions. Very much like normal GC's.

The hold button mod is the one that required lots of soldering but apart from changing regions and being extrememly neat also put the machine into pal mode so you can watch any dvd.

I still have the panasonic service disc to make it region free somewhere.

Was thinking of picking on up again (work colleague selling at cheap price)

Just remember the 'hold power button' a pain last time, seemed random when it worked.

Would only use it for games nowadays so a simple switch to go from US to Japanese gaming would be ideal.

In my opinion I now regard it as an all style and no substance machine. DVD is only through s-video, plus it always needs a step-down. A ?20 switched US gamecube, UK psu and an Asda DVD player blows it away.

I've had two Q's so I do know what they look like

                          Well I picked it up.

Booting up tonight, however long I hold the power button it won't start in US mode.
                          Happened 2nd time last night!

Is there a set time? Soooo frustrating!

I got mine from play-asia (and a RGB modded cable from lan-kwei and yes, you could get it pre-modded with the US/JAP region switch via "hold power button" and regio free dvd-player and mp3 player abilities.
But changing Game region was a bit random in my experience yes. Often I had to fiddle a bit with booting with the tray open or something like that.
But damn, it was my first (standalone) dvd-player back in the day (after the real Real Magic Hollywood plus + serial remote on PC days XD ).

Hmmmz, back in the days I actually had time to invest into anime dvd's 6_9

Purchased my Panasonic Q from Lik-Sang (fully modded, DVDs & GC) back in the day like many others - had it since '03.

Don't know if it's old age/wear 'n' tear, but the GC region-changing on my machine is acting funny. Using the Power Button on the machine to switch the machine on (in Game mode) will boot it in US mode, but holding it down won't change it to JPN mode - for that, you need to start the machine by holding down the "GAME" button on the machine! Could've sworn that holding down the Power Button alone used to switch between the two regions on its own?
