    download speeds with ntl broadband

hi, i've got the 150k service from ntl and i'm getting download speeds of around 15-23k/s and would like to know
    1. if you have got the 150k service what speeds are you getting
    2. if you have got the 600k or 1mb service what speeds are you getting?

i want to know because i am thinking about getting one of the higher services but want to know what kind of difference in speed there is.
    thanks for any help.

    I've got Telewest 1Mb Broadband.

Obviously the download speeds can vary greatly depending on where you're downloading from, but if its from a decentish site i usually get around 120k, sometimes even as high as 135kish.

I've got 1mb and I've had 399k at one point, although I suspect some dodgy IE arithmetic.

Usually 75-100k ish, although it all depends on where you're grabbing stuff from, how you're downloading and other network conditions; you'll notice the difference but don't grade your own connection on these results. Upgrade to 600k? You'll notice the difference, but not substantially so. 1mb, much better

512k ADSL here, and I normally get around 55-60k when dragging down those chunky zip files from a fast enough server.

512/8=64 kilobytes per second theoretical, but there will always be a certain amount of overhead due to error checking packets and all that nonsense.

I've got NTL 1meg. If it's from a site with plenty of spare bandwidth, I get my full line speed which is around 119~120k/sec. A good test used to be to download one of the matrix trailers from http://www.whatisthematrix.com . They always seem to be very fast, and good for testing your line speed.

is that how you work your download speed by dividing you speed by 8?
if it is then mine should be 18.75k/s so if i get around 20-23 then thats good right?

thanks for all the replys people i think i'll the 600k service for a month first then the 1meg service. does anybody know if sites like fileplanet are fast for downloading from as i like to download demos of games i want.

              thanks again

This is good for testing your speed.

Typically you'll only get 80 - 90% of your advertised speed though...

I get between 52 and 56 kilobytes per second on 512k ADSL when the theoretical maximum is 64KB/s. This is due to overheads accociated with the system apparently.

70Kb/s on NTL 600K here. Nice.

Costs him ?83 a month though, last laugh is on those who don't have it.

I don't know if this is still the correct method, cos I'm an old fart. But to work out the theoretical rate, I always assumed you divide by 10, because it's start bit, 8 data bits and then stop bit.

                            I think it's around 70 -75 with NTL's 600k .. that's what I get anyways.
