    Nasty malware infection

My PC is infested and neither AVG nor Ad-aware are picking up anything as being wrong.

    The symptoms are:

keystrokes lag severely when typing in IE
google result links take me to completly unrelated pages (usually shop sites)
when I log into ebay I immediately get a second pop-up asking for confirmation of card details - I would have fallen for this except the last entry they wanted was ATM PIN. Yeah right!!

As none of the malware programs are identifying a problem (and having googled it, others have had similarly poor results with other malware utilities) I'm wondering what my choices are.

If I ditch Internet Explorer and start using Chrome or something, would that resolve it? Is it even possible to uninstall IE?

Try Spyware Blaster, but more importantly, have you run HijackThis?

Run the latter, and see what it flags as supsicious according to the key/index. Then maybe google the suspicious entries or post them on here and then remove them if they are malicious.

Yep, run Hijack this is safe mode. I've had to do that before and manually remove inserted startup progs. Then try running malwarebytes in safe mode.

You could be rootkitted in which case it's a nightmare to remove. Infections as bad as what often go alongside a rootkit.

More likely however is that the malware is just interfering with scanners.

Run as many scanners as possible in safemode, post a hijack this log here or on a dedicated forum.

Try renaming the executables for your scanners before running too (most allow it)

Will do this when I have some time to sit down with it, thanks for the tips so far. If I have to post logs I'll probably do it here, you're a knowledgable lot and I don't like to go too far afield

As suggested, try Malwarebyes (in Safe Mode), it's usually pretty effective. Also try a boot scan with Avast (on the Avast menu select 'Scan Computer' > 'Boot-time Scan', then restart).

Disconnect the computer from the Internet once you have all the required software. This will stop the virus from downloading anything else in the background.
