    PC Engine Power Supply help

I've been trying get a suitable UK PSU for a PC engine IFU-30 briefcase setup.

    It requires 9V DC, 1450ma, inside negative, 2.5mm x 5mm jack.

I bought a 1.5A, voltage switchable PSU with mulitiple jacks. It fit the PC engine socket fine, powered on and spun the disc but it would not load any discs (works fine with 110v psu). I'm presuming it couldn't supply 1450ma at 9v despite being rated for it.

So I'm not left with 2 options, either buy the 2A version of the switchable PSU hoping it will provide enough juice or buy a much cheaper generic 9V 1.5A PSU and change the connector jack with the one from my 110v PSU. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...=STRK:MEWAX:IT Is this just a matter of cutting off the jack, stripping and twisting the wires together and wrapping in electrical tape?

Any advice would be much appreciated as I really want a solution for this so I can stop using the overheating stepdown that I have.

    Thanks.

Connecting the wires will be fine. Just make sure you get the polarity the right way around. Usually the wire will be half black, half white to help you, but I'm not sure whether that's a standard so it could be that one adapter treats the white wire as negative, the other might treat that as the positive.

Easiest way would be to check the polarity symbol and then use your multimeter to figure out which wire is connected to which part of the jack, especially with that Nokia-esque charger on eBay you've linked to, as it's just a single wire.

I had a PCE Duo+CD thing with the briefcase and I bought a 9V, 1.5A charger from Argos that worked fine with it.

:edit: Sorry, just noticed you mentioned the inside negative bit!

      Thanks for the advice.

Actually I did try connecting the jack to a generic 9V 1.5A PSU from Ebay but it turned out to be a piece of junk and was causing screen interference.

In the end I bought a switchable 2.25A PSU from Maplin, it came with a range of jacks and works perfectly.

It took 3 PSUs to find the right one but I got there in the end.
