Have replaced the thermal paste and fan and still on the noisy side, but at least I got rid of the dry, cracked old crud on the cpu, gpu and heatsinks :-) I've alsot noticed both my 60gb PS3's have the fans with more blades - the 19 blade model - thought these were only U.S and Japan?

Sounds like an early batch of them sneaked through to the EU then, where was the PS3 manufactured, Japan or China? Must be something wrong though if it's still loud, my launch Japanese 60GB is still whisper quiet.

Yeah I've read a few reports that some are simply very loud, although I'm not so sure. The one I'm using for parts - despite having a busted BR drive and being on f/ware 3.61, still runs whisper quiet, so have robbed most of the parts from there but still no joy, so clearly not the fan, psu etc. I am going to replace the heatsink tomorrow but after that I'm all out of ideas!#

So replaced the heatsink, re-applied thermal paste (very thin layer as advised) - so have now effectively replaced the whole cooling system! And still no joy, still sounds like a hairdryer :-( Ah well, guess it's destined to make this sound for ever.

Hmmm, having fiddled a bity more and played it for longer, could actually be the game(s) that were doing it!
Tried Bayonetta for a bit and the fan was on medium I'd say, same with Pro Evo 2011, when trying Uncharted 2 or GOW3 it ramps up the noise. Having read around this is a common issue due to the processing power being pulled on for the latter two - those were my primary test games so it figures the PS3 went crazy each time! It does make too much noise when idle I believe still, but it's definately better! Noticed it always does it at exactly the same bit during Uncharted 2 so clearly a game/gpu/cpu issue! :-)

It's not in an issue, the fans are just set to keep the components below a certain temp so they work harder during more load.

Yeah, I'm going to stop fiddling now I'm replaced everything I can and while on some games it's quite loud, I've played it for a few hours and no heating issues as such. May try another new fan at some point, but think it could be just a loud machine :-)

BlazBlue must be a low stress game then because only SSFIV makes my fans kick up a little bit..

Maybe it's a temp. sensor issue? Not sure if it's something that's easily replaceable or not(I doubt it is, most likely underneath the CPU/GPU or something), but I wonder if it could explain the fans ramping up more than they need to, even if it's game-specific?

The temp sensors and apparently in the CPU and GPU - got myself a slim now anyhow :-) Cheers. Yeah could well be a faulty temp sensor, so issues with console just a bit noisy.
