    Storage solutions

    Hey all,

So my Harddrive is in the red, nearly full and I need a solution to get extra storage.

Basically this Harddrive is only for ITunes and Steam, its a 750gig drive and I know I could probably buy a 1tb or 1.5tb and replace the one I have but it seems abit of a waste to swap out the current drive, is there a way to get another drive and somehow combine it with the one i'm already using so they appear as one drive, as far as I know you can't tell ITunes to store stuff over multiple drive letters.

Damn HD tv episodes take up so much space, especially as each one also comes with the SD version as well, so its like 2gig an episode.

    Cheers

    Mike

You can combine two drives of the same size in a RAID 0 array, but if one drive fails, you lose all data on both drives.
This can be done via the motherboard's own RAID controller (if the motherboard is relatively new), via an expansion card (but they can get pricey) or via software (but it will eat some CPU power).
I would go for a completely new HDD, maybe a 2TB one, and split data between the two discs, like videos on the 2TB drive and music on the old drive.

When I upgraded mine to 1TB from 300GB I just used the older one to backup documents/installers/games and some stuff that would still fit (using copy/move and MS synctoy.) I am not sure it would be worth the effort setting up a RAID. I don't recall any other way of doing what you wanted.

Thanks, seems for now the best bet is to just go for a big new drive, I guess by the time that fills up there will probably be 4-5tb drives available.

I've been using a QNAP 4 drive NAS recently. It does pretty much everything. Itunes server, UPNP server, media conversion for ipod/iphone/ipad streaming, web server, bittorrent station etc.
It is blisteringly fast 120Mb/s + over gbit, low powered and silent. It is 4Tb but unfortunately is ?800.

I bought a cheapy d-link 323 nas to put my old 1tb drive in as well as a new 2tb. Cheap but effective for storing my media.

That is super tempting, it looks like an awsome bit of kit, must say if I had the spare cash i'd probably buy it.

That looks more in my price range, do you know if you can set it so that two drives can be combined as one drive in win 7?
