Connecting my Wii to my DVI/VGA HDCP Monitor

    Hi,

I want to connect my PAL Wii to my DVI/VGA HDCP monitor as I'm fed up of playing my Wii/GC games on a tiny 14" SDTV. As far as I know, the best way would be to get a component to vga adaptor and handle the sound through my computer.

Would one of these be sufficient? I don't see why not?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PC-Laptop-VGA-...item43a68e50b4

    Open to all ideas/suggestions.

    Thanks.

If that did work, it'd be the most pitiful image I can imagine.

Best bet is an HD Box Pro really.

Could always look at the JS Technology convertors.

Get yourself the Scart to VGA one & you should be good...

I'm considering getting myself a Scart to Component one to try with my Megadrive, Saturn & SNES

That ebay lead would be pure puke. Sell your screen and get one with component inputs, its the only way, you'd be wasting your money with converter boxes for this one purpose imo.

I have an HD Box Pro myself for this purpose. The scaling quality is around the same, maybe a tiny bit worse than the monitor on its own, and there's a green tinge to dark parts of the image (can turn down saturation which helps). Otherwise does the job.

No that's too extreme and I can't afford it.

I'm just looking for a slight improvement and to be able to play my Wii on my monitor that I play my PS3 on.

I'll take a look at the HD Box Pro monomaniacpat but I'm really just looking for a cheap alternative to running my Wii on my monitor.

My monitor also supports 1080p, even though it shows a message on screen saying it isn't recommended.

            F-Zero GX calls for it.

Why would it? Are you basing your opinion soley on the price or is there something else?

I have bought plenty of cheap products similar (I.e. a gold plated HDMI cable back when I bought a PS3 at launch and it has excellent quality, identical to the official Sony HDMI cable they sold for ?20+

WOW! I appreciate you posting but I am not looking to pay ?70 to play my Wii on my monitor. Neither should you just for MD/Snes etc...

I've hooked up my Wii to my friends HDTV and all I want is the same thing with a component to vga adaptor, I don't see why it should be so expensive/hard and I think the link in my first post should do just that. No?

Harry. That link is a composite to VGA adaptor. Composite is the very lowest grade of video - hence my comment.

Oh right. This one here says it's component, but it looks the same apart than the different colours. Not sure why that is? Appreciate your input anyway.

                EDIT:

                Just found this:

DVD Talk publishes no-nonsense movie news and information about home media, including - reviews, columns, interviews, and discussion areas.

So if I was to use the component adaptor in the first link of this post I would need a component Wii cable as the one I have right now is a composit? Is that right?

I think I'm going to get one of the composite to vga adaptors just to see what it's like, I doubt it's worse than what I have now and at ?2 it's worth it just to see.

That's just an adaptor. They're designed for certain televisions that accept component via VGA - which I guarantee your monitor is not.

I doubt the composite to VGA adaptor will even give you an image too, as the signal will be 480i and I doubt your monitor will be able to handle that either.

Fact of the matter is, you're gonna have to spend at least ?25.

That really is the cheapest you'll be able to do what you want for.

Composite or not, that cheap converter cable on eBay won't do *anything* because it's designed for devices that actually output Composite video over the "VGA" socket. All that is is a mechanical adaptor to convert the socket.

                    See this part:

It's a bit like plugging US devices into a UK wall socket: if the device works on European/UK voltage, you can get away with using the cheap adaptor which just converts the plug shape. But more often than not you need something more specialised to do some conversion.

You need something which takes analog Component video from the Wii output (Y/Pb/Pr) and converts it either to Digital Component (Y/Cb/Cr) which can be sent over HDMI, or RGBHV (which can be sent over a "VGA" cable).

One of these is likely to be the safest bet:

You can then plug a cheap HDMI<->DVI adapter onto the end of the HDMI output.

                      Isn't this what you'd want?

BuyBits bring you the best of the leading mount brands and manufactures creating unique mounting options you won't find anywhere else.

I have one of these (I'm sure mine was only ?15 though) and it works fine.

Stuff like NES games won't display (240p only) but otherwise yeah I've read those are alright.
