On a slightly different tangent, it appears my Mac also has a region-free DVD drive without me doing anything at all - Super Mac!

a bit late to the game, but I needed to format an external hd for my cyclone media player, I installed TUXERA and I can happily read/write to my lil samsung 500gb portable drive

You are best to use an app for reading/writing to ntfs, something like this...
