help wanted re: sync strike psu

    Hi Guys (and gals?),
Just purchased a sync strike for connecting retro gear to a newer tv (and slg3000).
However it seems that I am required to connect a +5VDC/ +/- .5VDC @ 2A psu to power it.
Has anyone had experience with this device and can suggest a psu to use?
Do I need a PC type psu or can I use any that outputs the correct voltage
ie: old retro style psu (md/pce etc).
    any help appreciated.

I've tried one of these out. Apart from one of my RGB cables though, it worked by getting power from the Scart cable. It was a really cheap original xbox cable that wasn't wired properly that didn't work with it.

Are you sure that's the power requirements for it? from memory that's the power requirements for the VGA scaler that's doing the rounds everywhere at the moment, including being sold at arcadeforge as part of a kit with the Sync Strike and SLG3000.

If you do have to find a PSU for the Sync Strike, then it doesn't have to be a PC type, it could be something as basic as an old mobile phone charger that you cut the plug off, or even a USB cable that you chop the end off if you have something nearby with a USB socket on it you could use to power it.

As long as you can work out which is the + and which is the - wire from whatever you cut up! It doesn't draw anything near 2A though, it's a minuscule amount, and it doesn't need to be exactly 5v, it will operate at slightly lower, and in theory upto 12v (checking the spec of the chip that the board uses - lm1881n)

If you're talking about powering the VGA scaler, it's weird, as the packaging says 5v @ 2A, but on the board it does say 5 to 12v. Although I did accidently feed mine 12v and it got very very hot. And I doubt any old phone chargers will put out 5v @ 2a, you may have to look around for one of those multivoltage psu's with the different plugs on?

Or if you know someone with a bunch of old IT equipment hanging around, ask them, PSU's for old routers and other accessories come in handy for these things!

Hi, thanks for the reply mmmonkey.
Haven't purchased one of the upscaler boards yet (cga2vga) just the 2 other items mentioned above.
But when I tried both a NeoGeo CDZ and PS1 (fatty) both using RGB scarts I only got a 'red led'
using the PS1 (indicating +5V on pin 8 of scart lead) but still no picture on either a crt PC monitor or a
new style tv (led). I contacted the guy at arcadeforge mentioning this who re-directed my attention to:

and that the syncstrike needed a PSU - "follow step 3"
while I was under the impression that if the 'red led' lit up using the 2 way switch (psu or pin 8)
it should have worked with the PS1 and as you stated that appears to be the psu requirements for the
cga2vga scaler not syncstrike. Oh, and I probably should mention that the PS1 works fine through the
normal scart/hdmi adapter that came with the tv, just looks like lego.

So what is output of the Sync Strike going to? You can't just connect to a VGA socket of a monitor/tv as its not outputting the correct signal for that. The easiest way to use it is with that scaler which converts the RGBS signal to VGA.

Red LED is good by the way :-)
