Looking to buy a multi-region blu-ray player - any suggestions?

As header, am looking to replace my UK PS3 (which I have played the exact total of one game on) for a multi-region blu-ray player.

Two questions - can anyone recommend a player? Also, any suggested sites to get one from?

What happened to the bargain price programmable ones that were once available through HMV and Ebay?

I was hoping these would still be available, but it doesn't seem they are. The two site online that sell players by the likes of Sony and Panasonic seem to double the UK RRP. So one of the newer Sony models is ?140 from Amazon, but is ?300 on the site Paulus has listed for a multi-region copy. That feels overpriced for a mod!

I think one of the reasons for the high pricing is the skill required to solder the tiny chip points.

I'm wondering whether it's easier to pick up a US machine - so if anyone has any ideas on that front as well...
