PC boots to desktop unpromted,any ideas?

Playing some games ie AvP2 and Max Payne 2 and after a time the pc will just go straight to the desktop with no error message,not only is it a pain but I loose what I had just done on the game.Does anybody know why this might be happening?

windows xp
radeon 9800pro 128
audigy2 sound card
160 gb HD
1024 RAM

This could be one of many things. I've fixed problems like this in the past by upgrading my version of DirectX and also making sure that you've got the latest graphics card drivers and also XP service pack 1 if you don't already have that. Runnning Windows Update wouldn't do any harm.

EDIT: Think it might be this:

Theres a problem with the audigy. it need DX9 compatible drivers which cant be found on cretives site.

It might be the PC god punishing you for having such a leet PC!!

the only other suggestion I have which isnt as sensible as the one above is, do you have the latest Direct X installed?

two years of saving for my PC and to be honest it has crashed more times than a crashing thing(insert something funny)

have downloaded latest drivers will give it a go by looking at the forums i am not alone with this.

what mbo are you running, try and (if its based on a via chipset) get the latest via hyperions they sometimes sort out a load of problems

also perhaps you may have an agp x8 incompatability

or your radeons not getting enough power

downloaded dx9 installed it sent pc into meltdown would not load xp coming up with error messages.Then a blue screen came up checking disc and something about orphans

Now wont play Max payne at all missing DDRAW.dlll reinstall application.Reinstalled MP2 got right to the end a major error message came up about english something,was seeing red by then.

Mobo is a MSI K7N2 DELTA nforce 2 chipset

Had the first problem with my PC a while back. Updated DX to v9 and it fixed it. As for this new problem you are having unistall DX9 and any other versions you have and then restart. Now install DX9 with no virus scanners on or even loaded into the start tray. Restart your PC again and hopefully that should fix it. Make sure you get DX9b too. If that doesn't fix it boot up in safe mode and then its just a case of going into msconfig and switching off each start up program one by one to see what the problem is. Unless you can tell from your error messages.
