Blu Ray player suddenly stopped playing other region DVDs?

We have a Sony Blu Ray player in the living room (BDP-S370), connected to a Bravia via HDMI, had it about 15 months now. Up until yesterday it's been fine playing any region DVD, it was like that out of the box. But now any non region 2 DVD we put in gets met with a message about it not being the correct region. Any reason why this might have suddenly happened now? Anything we can do to fix it? We haven't updated the firmwire since the day we bought it either.

Have you tried a disc that isn't region 2 that you know for sure worked before? Many discs are labeled as a specific region, yet are actual region free (or 0). I've never heard of that player being delivered region free either. If you have the appropriate remote control, you can input a code to make it region free.

Yeah, I had been watching an imported set of "Castle" series two on the player, went to watch another couple of episodes and now it won't play. I can't imagine some discs in the set (five) would be region 1, and some region 0. There is a universal remote hack online, but it's still a question of being worth it to purchase that, especially as I have a chipped DVD player here doing nothing also.

I have an OPPO DVD player which intermittently (every few months) stops being region free and then I have to enter a remote code again. It's sometimes the nature of the firmware be susceptible to being reset.
