Using MotionInJoy without a tin foil hat

MotionInJoy is a driver and configuration program to let you use PS3 Dual Shock 3 (and now PS2 Dual Shock 2) controllers on a PC. It can be used to pretend to be an XBox 360 controller, a regular gamepad or you can configure it to map various inputs to keys. I use a Playstation Navigation controller (like a wii nunchuck) to play FPSs for instance.

The downside has always been that the controller app requires a network connection and delivers adverts to you. It may also do other things. So, quite rightly a lot of people have been wary of using it, including me. The thing is though, it's so useful! Anyway, here's how to set it up so that it works locally, wioth no internet connection:

    1. Install MotionInJoy from here http://www.motioninjoy.com/download

    2. Download the 'local' files from here:

    http://forums.motioninjoy.com/viewforum.php?f=66

    3. Copy the 'local' directory into here:

    C:\Program Files\MotioninJoy\ds3

Now when you run the ds3_tool.exe it will still go online and fetch ads but you can click on the local button at the top of the control and use the local version of the UI.

However, I noticed that ds3_tool.exe still had internet connections so...

Open Windows firewall and block all incoming and outgoing traffic for the process ds3_tool.exe

Now when you launch ds3_tool.exe you'll get an error page loading up (because it can't get an internet connection) but click on the 'local' button on the top and you should be able to get everything working as before.

    Thanks for this

Could this be configured to use the ps move controller as a gun for mame, m2 and the like? I could never get the wiimote to work properly with glovepie.

Thanks for this, very useful and something I need to try. I'm guessing you need the PS Eye connected to the PC?

Off topic, but is the Guncon 3 better for Raizing Storm or the Sharp Shooter? I have the latter but can never quite calibrate it perfectly, the horizontal axis is always slightly off. I know there were threads on here ages ago but I need to dig them up.

I have the Sharpshooter and also find its accuracy a bit hit and miss. I found personally that if I deleted the patch that corrects the aim wandering and turn 'off' the accelarometer (not sure if that's the correct spelling!?) from the XMB, then aiming was a tad better. That said I believe that the Guncon 3 is potentially better for the game, as I hear it's more precise, although I guess if it's specifically for the Raizing Storm title precision doesn't have to be spot-on, unlike TC4.

Motioninjoy supports all ps3 controllers including move. I guess you need to hook up the eye for that to work. I've not tried it. I like it because I can use the navi controller for fpss and my ds3 can be used as a xbox controller for console designed games eg alpha protocol.

The guncon is better for razing storm IMO but not because of the accuracy. If you calibrate fully when you switch the ps3 on, using the xmb calibration system then i find calibration remains true for the session. IMO you need to do this every time you turn your ps3 on and want to use move.

I've tried that, it's still always off, is it because I need to be further from the screen? Some people online suggest turning off one of the move sensors, but I don't know about the patch Escape mentioned. I'm probably 1.8 metres away, max. For what other reasons is the Guncon better, and is the original TC4 release any better than the one on the Raizing Storm pack?

Dunno mate, both mine are fine.

Gun con is better cos it's a gun innit!? TC4 lets you play without a reticle using gun con.

TC4 has an fps mode not present in the version included in razing storm. Other than that no difference iirc.
