Big WinXP Laptop Problem

During my monthly laptop maintence regime I was defragmenting and, through my own fault, cut the power supply. The battery is a bit dodgy and on start up I received a message about an improper shutdown. So I closed it down properly, rebooted, logged on and everything looked OK. I restarted the defragmenting and noted immediately it was showing over twice the fragmentation there was before I'd started it previously. I didn't think it was anything to worry about, minimised the window whilst it was running and clicked to do something else and that's when the laptop crashed to the blue screen of death. Error message:-Stop: C000021a {Fatal System Error]The Session Manager Initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of:0xc000026c (0x0000000 0x0000000}The system has been shut down.It boots and then just before the login screen up comes that message.None of the Advance menu options work ie. you can't start in Safe Mode.Eventually I was given some good advice about how to use the Repair Console from my XP Installation disc but the solution suggested (copying in fresh winlogon.exe and csrss.exe) didn't work.I'm wondering what to do now. I really don't want to reinstall WinXP as I only have the original WinXP install disc and that just has SP1 included. I'd have to get SP2/3 and with dial-up that isn't simple. Likewise whatever other programs I'd lose with a reinstall.I can sort that out thanks to an offer from a helpful relative but I'd prefer not to go through all that hassle if there is another easier solution. Any suggestions appreciated particuarly about if there are any tools within the WinXP Repair Console I could try which might fix this.

Did you try running Chkdsk from the Recovery Console? Full instructions here (Option 2), then try chkdsk /p /r at the command prompt. See how you go from there.

I have service pack 2 and 3 on disc which I can post to you if you need them as I don't as on 7 now

I really hope I won't need them but the offer is much appreciated.Using Chkdsk is something that I've read others have successfully solved this problem but my PC guru on the other forum I mentioned has come up with a a new idea. So I'm going to go with that first. I can see my options slowing narrowing down to having to do a reinstall so any other advice/suggestions welcome.
