Best setting for an original Xbox on HDTV thru RGB???

Just trying to get my Xbox 1 looking the best it can thru RGB on my 32" Samsung LE32C530.

Anyone know the best picture settings to use, plus is it better playing in 4:3 rather than widescreen??

Also, just got an S-Video cable for two quid from the market, know it's supposed to be a bit worse than RGB but is it compatible with the telly I've got (games room is is such disarray that I can't reach the back without removing loads of wires/stuff!)

    Cheers in advance!

PS: I'll only be using RGB on non-modded PAL Xbrick, no component or VGA.

I think all Xbox games were programmed to run in widescreen so keep it in that mode.

MS did an official component cable for the 360 and I'm sure you can soft mod it to output at 720p.

The official component wasn't available in the UK as far as I'm aware. It's official PS2 RGB scart cable rare too. Big money if you can find one.
      Kept you waiting, huh?

Was that the stupid one with the big box and the various plugs for component , composite and SVideo?

Total waste of money if it that's the case.

There will be so much processing and scaling going on on LCD that the difference between Svideo and RGB are going be so tiny anyway.

Back in the day I was used the video switcher thing on a memory card to change my Xboxes Video settings to NTSC, then you get acccess to component and Progressive Scan / 480p which did make a bigger difference on an LCD.

I used that Xbox on LIVE with no problem, dead easy to switch back too

          That'd be the component one.

^I won't be using component, it's full up with the Wii/PS2, all I'm really after is optimal RGB picture settings that make it look pretty 'natural', and nice-looking. When I get it looking half-decent, then the colours tend to look a bit too colourful, yet in other games they look muted.

Kinda just looking for settings that create a 'happy medium', not expecting the world, just something that looks consistently decent I can play that doesn't create that sensation of minor niggles...

You'd get a lot more benefit from the Xbox via component than the PS2. I'd suggest getting a PS2 RGB SCART cable and an Xbox component cable really.

^Yeah, but it'd mean getting the Xbrick softmodded, plus locating a component cable. For the time being, can't be arsed.

                  Hm, I guess so.

The benefits of playing emulators and stuff in HD is pretty neat though. Something to think about at least.

PS2 via component for me just means I can't play 240p stuff on my LCD. lol

Make sure game mode is on.

anything else that can be turned off , things like black level enhances, dynamic color nonsense should be off, there will be a whole menu of them.

That will disable most of the hideous filters, standard practice for any console.

Turn sharpness to 0 (no enhancement) and then adjust to your preference

^Cheers EB, must rid myself of the 'sharpness' OCD (don't know why, always seem to feel a need for jaggles)! Turned off all that 'black level' nonsense yonks back 'cos I was getting screen blur, made my head feel funny.

PS: Speedy, I have the same prob, have to use RGB on the PS2 for that, plus *certain* PS2 games that only run in that mode.

Yeah, it's a TV issue really. Bit annoying as all the HDLoader menus and stuff are in 240p.

Pretty frikken annoying. Use comp for my PS3 currently, probably less latency than HDMI. 360 via VGA is silky smooth.

The scaling of standard definition already softens the look of a game or makes it seem blurry, all the sharpness does really is puts halos and jaggies around your jaggies.

You personal preference may feel having a bit of sharpening looks better to your eyes, I'd start at 0 and increase it a little as opposed to the other way.

^I think I'm 'softening' in that regard, sharpened the Wii up too much and it looks plain ugly, looks much better when a tad smoothed out, more natural. Just tried softening it for Otogi 2, looks a wee bit nicer than having pixellated edges to the main character.

To access HD output through component on a Pal Xbox, don't you have to edit a text file or something? I need to do it and change the hard drive on one. I also have another one which used to make strange noises so I just let it gather dust. About the PS2 scart v component thing, my current telly gave a much better picture through component compared to RGB scart, I wasn't expecting such a drastic difference.
