    networking question

I need a bit of help. I am trying to network my 2 pcs together. I am using a cross over cable and I have edited the hosts and lmhosts files on both pcs to have these entries

    192.168.0.1 PC1
    192.168.0.2 PC2

And I have set the ips on both machines to these 2 ips above and set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. I have also turned off firewalls on both pcs but they still wont network. I cant ping one from another. PC1 is win2k pro and pc2 is winxp.

    Can someone help?

    Thanks

Can you ping by IP address?

If so, it's a problem with not looking up the entries in the hosts file (name resolution).

    If not, dodgy cable/network cards.

when i ping them i get nothing, request timed out.
I have 2 cross over cables and neither works and I know both network cards are fine.

      HELP!!!

Does Windows recognise the cable as connected?

        And you sure typing:

        ping 192.168.0.1

        doesn't work?

Did you set up the IPs using DHCP i.e. "obtain IP address automatically"?

Have you made them part of the same workgroup? I swear to god MS networking's so messed up that often windows PCs refuse to "see" or aknnowledge each other if they aren't part of the same workgroup. Curiously windows computers on a windows networking "domain" never have the same problem :S

check that the network cards are enabled and the drivers don't show any conflicts - do you get any link lights from the cards?

one thing i have noticed, when i do ipconfig /all on my win2k pc i get

                Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : PC1
                Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
                Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast
                IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes
                WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

But on the xp box I get

                Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : PC2
                Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . :
                Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Unknown
                IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No
                WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Does anyone know how I change PC2 to look like PC1 ie set the node type to broadcast and enable ip routing?

Do you have a net connection shared on PC1?

You shouldn't need another protocol. You also misunderstand my question: if you share an internet connection, IP routing is turned on for that PC, which might have explained the discrepancies.

Delete all the network protocols on the 2k box and reinstall em to reset all configs to install defaults.
Follow this on your XP box to do the same (perhaps it works on 2k too, haven't got a 2k box to check).

With that in mind, do the absolute basic needed to setup the peer to peer connection, ie give each machine an IP address on the lan connection.

With no firewalls etc present, if you can't ping then, I'd say sommit else is the cause (nic problem etc).

                          PEOPLE THANKYOU!!!

After a few hours of fiddling i have it working, at last.
Dont know what the problem was but it seems to of cured itself. All I gotta do now is cop all the good **** from my old pc to my new pc, install Unreal tournament and I am Gogg to G O.

                          THANKYOU
