CRT TV turns on when it feels like it...

Hello, for about four years now my CRT TV takes it time to turn on, or may simply refuse to turn on at all if I do not leave it turned off and unplugged for a few days. If I leave it for a month or so, it turns on almost instantly, but if I wait only a day or three, it may decide to turn on, but it will often take its time to turn on (15-20 minutes or more) if I decide to only wait that long. What could be causing this, and would anybody know how to fix it?

My TV used to do this. I can only assume it's a cold solder joint as hitting it on the side used to kick it back into life. Hit up a TV repair shop if you can really be bothered to repair it or get a replacement.

It is 28" so I would rather not have to take it anywhere. And I am not really up to lugging a replacement for miles either, which leaves me to repair it myself. What should I look out for?

You'd have to just look out for cold solder joints I imagine and reflowing them. Probably not worth it though, working on CRT isn't that safe.

Is this a really good CRT you have? A lot of people tend to give them away these days so you could always scout around for something else if not.

Yes, it has very good image quality and has a pretty much perfect picture when used with an RGB SCART cable. It would just pain me to throw it away when I could potentially fix it, and if not, I could just wait a month before using it again, lol. I suppose that you could say that it has a lot of sentimental value to me, since my father purchased it for me and I have had many happy memories using it for PS1 and PS2 games over the years.

I opened it up and the soldering looks fine. Is there anything else that could cause this problem?

I am sorry but that was useless. It did not help.

If it's a hardware issue with the TV ? which it sounds like ? then you have no real choice but to take it in for repair. CRTs are extremely dangerous to attempt a self-repair since they hold so much static electricity. Only a qualified repairman should attempt a fix.

Well, it's under the anode where the static is stored and you wouldn't have to remove the tube from the chassis I imagine but generally I agree.

I have opened it before to make some adjustments to the picture, so that is no problem, I will be careful and it hasn't been used for some weeks now. Speedlolita, what sort of problem are you suggesting that it may be?

I suggested a dry joint which you dismissed already. But I don't know all that much.

Perhaps PM oldgamingfart, he's got some CRT knowledge.

I wouldn't say "dismissed". That is not what happened. I said that I opened it up and it didn't appear to be the case; the soldering looked fine.

I was hoping that he would reply by now, but since he hasn't I will PM. Thank you for the suggestion.
