Yamaha YSP-2200

Hi all,

I'm finally moving out to my own pad soon and am extremely excited about renovating the living room to cater for my gaming needs. Having said that though I'm not sure I want to have the full 5.1 speakers cluttering my living room.

Has anyone on this forum tried the Yamaha YSP 2200? is it any good for games and would you recommend it over a full on clutter 5.1 setup?

I've had this demoed in a HiFi store. If you're expecting convincing surround sound you will be dreadfully disappointed. For ?700 you can get something that will sound WAY better than this. Putting even tiny little surround speakers on the wall behind where you sit will give a much better system than this. I realise that people don't like the idea of cables everywhere but spend a portion of that ?700 on some super flat speaker cable you can shove under the carpet and do the job properly.

Don't trust HiFi reviews either. What HiFi will tell you a ?100 HDMI lead gives a better picture than a ?10 one so we know they're on the payroll for starters.

Disclaimer: Just because it was a HiFi shop doesn't mean the bloke who set it up / demoed it knows what he's doing. Hopefully others with first hand experience will be able to provide an opinion too.

I read the favourable reviews too and I think for the money the Yamaha YSP 2200 gives a good account of itself. The subwoofer adds a lot of weight to the sound and I can hear rear sound effects, even though the speaker bar is under my TV.

Definitely go for the full 5.1 setup over the soundbar I tried a few because with the baby due anyday now I thought I'd look at doing away with the cables & even compared to my 7 year old Yamaha beginner setup it sounded pretty naff.
It wasn't bad but not on a level that I thought they were worth replacing.

For ?700 you could get a middle of the road amp like an Onkyo, Denon or Pioneer VSX & a set of Kef Eggs for around that price which would blow it out of the water.

Thought I would post here as I am thinking what is best, I saw the Sonos Playbar and was tempted to go down the route of a bar as I know my wife won't let me have rear speakers so the question is, is it better to go with a bar or to maybe get two bookshelf speakers a central and a decent receiver or even two floorstanding speakers and a central?

If you are really desperate you can get flat speakers that look like wall ornaments (you'd need to channel the wall). I assume your sofa is against a wall though...

I ended up ordering a Yamaha RX437 and probably go with a 3.0 setup for now with two floor standing speakers and a center as we will be in rented accommodation for the next year.

You assumed right though!
