Connecting Xbox Live to a mac

I know I've seen this on the forum somewhere, but a search didn't reveal anything. Could someone point me in the right direction please?

First get a router then plug in Mac, Modem, and XBOX and then it will work fine, but it wouldn't work with Tunnel Spy software unless someone wrote a Mac version.

After a bit of work I have XBox live running on my mac and I'm pretty sure I can help you.
List here or PM your setup (OS, router, how you want to connect, etc.) and I will help.

I'm wondering if you can help me...

I have my Mac ADSLed up with a USB modem. I use the built-in Internet connection sharing and run an ethernet cable into the front room where a 10/100 Base-T switching hub allows me to connect another Mac (and my friend's PowerBook) and the PS2 or Xbox. This connection method (almost unbelievably) worked with both Live and PS2 Network Gaming until I updated from 10.2 to Panther (10.3). I haven't tried taking the PS2 online since but the Xbox just doesn't want to know.

I know I can fix it with a router but it's money I'd rather not spend if I can help it. Is there a way to fix it by fiddling with the manual set-up? ISP is BT (business), btw.

Right 1st off, I'm in no way an expert and probably know less than you.
What I do know is that mine refused to work at 1st because for some reason the Xbox didn't recognise that it was connected to a mac.
My mac knew to share, the Xbox wouldn't. These settings got it working.

1st off, what message do you get when you connect to live?
Try without a game in the brick, just choose live from the startup screen.
Ensure you have gone system prefs/sharing/start on the mac.

You should choose "built in ethernet" on the "share connection from:" box.

Depending on what the error message is, I can help you from there.
BTW, are the settings on the xbox itself filled in or are they blank?

Yeah, the Xbox won't connect even without a game in. I think it knows there's a connection of some kind - it does try to connect and then reports that its attempts fail. Troubleshooting it reports that no network connection could be found (I think perhaps it's just detecting that there's a cable connected and no further than that). I've always had everything set to auto on the 'box - the problem is that it used to work and now it doesn't. I know it's not a firewall issue because I've tried it with the 'wall turned off.

Anyway, don't worry about it if you're not an expert on the mysterious workings of Panther - thanks for replying anyway.

Turn Xbox on with no game, choose live.
Righty, is the message on your TV this:

"A network creation could not be created"

When you click OK it will start to bring up four bullet points:

                "Cables connected"
                "IP Settings configured"
                "DNS resolved"
                "Xbox live found"

Which one does it get stuck on?

If it's the 1st one then either your ethernet isn't plugged in or your ethernet is broke.

If it get's stuck on the second one then your IP settings are incorrect.
These settings are general, try these general settings:
                (From Xbox dashboard)
Before you change anything make sure you make a note of what they currently are so that if these settings don't work you haven't lost anything

                IP Addresses Select, change to:
                Config= Manual
                IP Address= 10.0.2.3
                Subnet Mask= 255.255.255.0
                Gateway= 10.0.2.2

                DNS Servers
                Config= Manual
                Primary DNS= 10.0.1.1
                Alternate DNS= 0.0.0.0

                Leave PPPOE and advanced alone.

Ensure that you have turned sharing on in system prefs of your mac.
                From system prefs click "network".
Note down your current setting and then change it to 10.0.2.2

If it's the 3rd error message then you have not turned your internet on.
This could be that you either haven't turned your router on, haven't turned your wireless device on, Xbox live has gone down or your internet itself is broke.

The 4th message you will only see if it's working, so seeing that is good

As for why it isn't working anymore, I couldn't hazard a guess.
All I know is that it's a Xbox problem rather than a mac one, and with those general settings you should be O.K. I have recently upgraded to Panther and my live works fine and I've not had to change any settings.
LMK if this is any help or if the error message is something totally different.
                Stu

Edit- One thing that has just hit me, you're using a USB modem, through a hub, right? Ensure your drivers for that are the latest one's.
Plus I have just found this quote:
I was using Live through Mac ICS because I have a USB ADSL modem. I have an ethernet cable going to a four port switching hub in the other room from the Mac which everything plugs into (other Macs etc.). I was patching the Xbox into this and it worked fine ...

... until I upgraded to Panther (Mac OS 10.3). It no longer works so I'll have to get a router. If your friend has OS 10.2 and the modem isn't using the ethernet port just wire the Xbox into it, turn on connection sharing in the Sharing control panel (in system preferences) and it'll work fine. Otherwise it's the router solution
If that's the case then you may be out of luck. You will need a router.
I suggest this cheap and cheerful one one. That site is good and the router I have myself and works fine.

One more thing Furoshiki, what games are you trying to use on Live?
I have found that some games won't allow content downloads if the Panther firewall is turned on (system prefs/sharing/firewall).
Try turning that off, see if it helps.

The firewall in Panther is much stronger than 10.2, maybe this is why your live has stopped working.
