    PC Engine controllers US/JAP

    OK then...

I've asked a friend who is truly an EXPERT on the PC Engine (he's owned all models except, like, the shuttle thing, and he's got an LT of course ), and generally he really knows his console trivia.

He says that a TurboGrafx TGX16 pad will work just fine on a japanese DUO, but I've seen the opposite mentioned a couple of places now, and I've even come across this on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...category=54982

I've already ordered a TGX16 pad from Lik-Sang, but only so I wouldn't wear down the normal PC Engine controller I'll be getting with the DUO, so it doesn't really matter a lot, but I'd like to know.

I've not got any US pads knocking about at the moment to give you a definite answer, but i'm 99.9% sure that friends and i have used US pads on a Japanese white PCE / CDRom setup before when playing Bomberman. I'm also pretty positive that i've used Japanese pads on occasion when playing on the US Duo.

Sorry i can't be any more definite than that.

Right lets clear this up (and tell your friend he's a munkin who knows nothing ;P)...

The PC Engine has the same joystick port on all models... same 8 pin mini din socket on everything from the Engine, LT, Duo, Capsule, etc, etc...

The original Turbo Grapx 16 had a standard 8 pin socket (thats the big chunky one not mini din), this was probably done to stop people using PC Engine pads on the machine.... (allegedly the TG16 is soo big because of FCC regulations on RF Interference, yeah right... and that effected the Joypad port too /me strokes chin)

However the Turbo Duo used the Mini Din plugs of the PC Engine as the American Duo uses the same case as the PC Engine Duo does...

So Turbo Grafx pads won't work, however Turbo Duo pads will...

The pins on the TG16 and PC Engine are still wired up in the same way, so you could make an adapter or cut the lead off and solder a mini din to it....

Failing that you could always make a Neo Geo Stick to PC Engine convertor...

Heres some pictures to show the different port sizes...

As you can see the TG16 has a much bigger joystick port... >_<

Alright, I'll put a mini din on it I knew I had read something along those lines a long time ago, but I just couldn't remember exactly how it was.

        Thanks!
