Sony MDR-DS7500 Optical HD audio?

Right i'm going to pick one of these up to replace my old Pioneers as they are getting a bit worse for wear. Just wondering do i need to use HDMI to get HD audio or can i just use optical cable for it? I know this has a hdmi passthrough, but the way i have my av setup might be a bit awkward to move everything around.

Yes, just can't carry 5 channels of the good stuff is my understanding.
