    Ps2 chip ???

I recently purchased a cheap secondhand ps2 with a selfbooting chip installed, the guy told me the chip was installed about eight months ago but he doesn't know which chip. I have recently been making backup copies of some of my ps2 games to keep them as mint as i can, i have no problems running the cd backups but the dvd backups are a problem. When i stick in a dvdr the ps2 just comes up with the please insert a playstation or ps2 disc.
I know they work as i had a mate test one on his recently modded silver ps2, do i have a early chip that won't read dvdr's ?? or do i need a special boot method. I don't know what chip is in the console, nor did i ask the guy where the mod was done and who did it, i also don't have his phone number. It's a SCH 30003 model with ten screws underneath, can anyone shed any light on this, i can also assure anyone who may want to help that no dodgy dealings are involved.

I'm not sure that the problem is with the chip. Older PS2's cannot always read DVD-R's. The newest model is the first one that is meant to be able to read all disks.

Fraid it sounds like the DVD reading part of the laser's buggered m8. All PS2's will play DVD-rs with some success(some prefer one make over another), but the new one should play all. The lasers in 30003's are crap to be honest, especially if the old owner had been playing CDR games, as these will defo bugger them up, as parts are ripped from the game, the laser has to dart all over the disc to read it, and a syou can still read CDR's this sounds likely. I think it is something to do with needing more'grunt' for want of a better word to read a DVDr rather than a CDr.

Looking at about ?50 for a new laser, or sell it on Ebay as spares or repair for about ?60

Using your PS2 to play pirate copies will bugger the laser after a while.
Please don't ask for info on how to play "backup" items. Against forum rules.
