    Gaming Magazine question, need opinions.....

    greetings

liked and looked at the site for a while, finally decided to join today. so erm, HI ALL!

ok, live abroad from UK, at least until late next year. Had a subscription to EDGE, and absolutely HATED the magazine ever since redeyes ****ing damned annoying column that basically insulted anyone who ever regarded themselves as a serious hardcore gamer. Im sure someone else can describe what he said, I wont, it just infuriates me too much.

anyway, my subscription has FINALLY come to an end, and I want to subscribe to another mag.

Famitsu doesnt do subs, Id need to find a specialist company, and even then, Id barely understand half the text.

EGM has trouble with my adress, and seems too full of ads

Gamefan hasnt been around for how long now?

EDGE Ive stated I dont like.

so, my last choice would be "GamesTM", I have 1 issue, and like it a great deal.

Could someone recomend a good gaming magazine to subscribe to? I know everyone would of course recomend NTSC-UK, but I really need something in paper form to read on the train, bog, on long trips, or simply chilling and not in front of my screen. It also allows me to quickly find a pic, even its 2 in the morning and my pc is off.

If there were a paper mag of NTSC-UK, Id subscirbve straight away, heck Id subscribe twice to make sure I dont lose an issue, but sadly there isnt.

so for when im away from my PC:
What would YOU recomend for some one who plays all 3 regions of system games, likes retro, loves importing, but also wants to know the cutting edge of gaming in the usa AND Japan? Someone who also wants the REALLY wierd and obscure types of gaming info, Im talking crazy stuff. I hate to use stereotyped labels, but a hardcore magazine, that lets say doesnt pander to the mainstream, something self assuridly "uber-geeky".

My best guess right now is GamesTM

any other advice? thanks in advance, and sorry if this was in the wrong topic area.

Thanks for your comments on NTSC-UK

You can't go wrong with gTM really, not only has it improved massively since issue 1, if you subscribe each issue only costs around ?2.

      Welcome to the forum.

I think to be honest you have already pointed out which magazine is for you. The only decent alternative to Edge (in English) is Games TM. It covers all your main requirements; multi format, imports and retro, the news section is also much better than Edge.

You could also look into a few fanzines. Blessed is very good (well it was last time I read it). They dont do reviews or news but are just a collection of feature articles on gaming.

        cheers, will look into fanzines.

sadly, any subscription I get will cost me around ?5 an issue since Im living on the mainland temporarily. my edge sub certainly cost alot.

I guess I did answer my own question, but wanted to be sure nothing new and exciting had popped onto the market in my absence.

        cheers for the info

Well, I wouldn't give up on EDGE just quite yet. Considering a significant proportion of its writing team recently resigned, there could be a few 'interesting' changes happening to the magazine over the next few months.

          Keep your eyes peeled.

As for, GamesTM, well like many around here, all I can do is sing it's praises. The publication seems to be getting stronger with each issue.

yes, I see on futurenet that there is a vacancy for EDGE editor.
hmmm, but personally I still feel a little burned by redeyes 2 columns.

I dunno, what does everyone else think of those columns he did a few issues back?
they also seemed to miss out big events, like the miyamoto signing back in february.

The Redeye columns are supposed to be a sideways swipe at the games world in general - personally I like the grumpy 'right to moan' that he espouses, in fact his and Biffo's column are probably my favourite things in Edge.

However I would say that until recently the editorial nature of the magazine was not as negative as redeye, this hasn't been the case for the past few months - methinks the resignations show that the high end editorial team at edge were getting a little too disillusioned. Hopefully the new editor will bring a little more balance.

GamesTM is a damn good magazine, personally I buy both fairly religiously - no magazine is perfect but at least we now have two magazines for the adult gamer!

There is only 2 decent gaming magazine which is Edge and Games TM both have it strength and weakness.

If it is not good enough, have a look at American games magazine as there must be one worthy to read but no idea.
