pc error help

Help! Got a new hard drive in my laptop which I`ve loaded with windows 2000 and I keep getting the same error message which reads svchost.exe has generated errors and will close etc.
any ideas?
The main problems after the error are that I can`t click on links and can`t drag icons on the desk top.
Please go easy on me I`m no pc wiz

I forgot I`ve also loaded up service pack 4 and the worm blaster update from the microsoft down loads page.

There was a virus which affected svchost as I remember... In fact one of my mates had the problem with the icons... it was a f*cked up virus and took a while to sort it out...

Have you ran a full virus scan on your hard drives and all subsequent partitions?

Ran the blaster worm scan and got it! and then got rid of it.
