    PS3 won't read games.

Wondering if anyone knows the best course of action here. My nieces PS3 won't read disks anymore, the console itself is fine plays any digital title fine. It is way out of warranty and I have opened it up to try and clean the lens but that seemed to help but did not fix it.

Is the best option here to sell it for spares and buy a new one or look into buying a new blu ray drive or sending off to Sony for a fix?

Any pointers much appreciated as my niece loves Little Big Planet.

Thanks for the reply, she does want to play other games too just plays LBP2 most of the time as she got quite a few games on disks for her birthday. If replacement drives are that much is it worth it?

Would be great if you could ask though, thanks!

the drives are about that price but you have to make sure you get the right one as you have to swap the logic boards over. Just had to do this when my PS3 went down with the update loop error

Just saw this post thanks for the info. I think we are just going to sell it for spares and get a 12gb slim now, just impossible to find the caddy replacements anywhere at a fair price!

Before you sell it, try a hard disk format. I had a problem with my old PS3 not reading them at one time and that fixed it right up.

                  Is it a 40gb fat Ps3?

It was a common issue with 40gb units. I remember I had it with my console in 2007, on this very day. Returned it that same day and got a replacement.

I didn't try to restore or anything, I was told it were a batch of bad BR drives.

It is a 120gb slim which I am sure I read on here somewhere suffered from bad manufacturing. Do you think I could phone Sony and argue for a replacement?
